SIRSystemOverview
Thesupplementalinflatablerestraint(SIR)systemsupplementstheprotectionofferedbytheseatbelts.The
SIRsystemcontainsaninflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnosticmodule(SDM),airbags,seatbelt
pretensioners(retractor),andimpactsensors.Theinflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnosticmodule
determinestheseverityofacollisionwiththeassistanceofimpactsensorslocatedatstrategicpointsonthe
vehicle.Whentheinflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnosticmoduledetectsacollision,theinflatable
restraintsensinganddiagnosticmodulewillprocesstheinformationprovidedbythesensorstofurther
supportairbagorpretensionerdeployment.Theinflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnosticmodulewill
deploytheairbagsandpretensionersifitdetectsacollisionofsufficientforce.Iftheforceoftheimpactis
notsufficienttowarrantairbagdeployment,theinflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnosticmodulemaystill
deploytheseatbeltpretensioners.Theinflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnosticmodulecontainsasensing
devicethatconvertsvehiclevelocitychangestoanelectricalsignal.Theinflatablerestraintsensingand
diagnosticmodulecomparesthesesignalstovaluesstoredinmemory.Ifthesignalsexceedastoredvalue,
theinflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnosticmodulewilldeterminetheseverityoftheimpactandeither
causecurrenttoflowthroughthefrontaldeploymentloopsdeployingthefrontalairbagsandpretensioners,
oritwilldeploythepretensionersonly.Theinflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnosticmodulecontinuously
monitorsthedeploymentloopsformalfunctionsandilluminatestheSIRsystemAIRBAGindicatorifafaultis
detected.Theinflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnosticmoduleperformscontinuousdiagnosticmonitoringof
theSIRsystemelectricalcomponents.Upondetectionofacircuitmalfunction,theinflatablerestraintsensing
anddiagnosticmodulewillsetaDTCandinformthedriverbyilluminatingtheSIRsystemAIRBAGindicator.
Thesteeringcolumnandkneebolstersaredesignedtoabsorbenergyandcompressduringfrontalcollisions
inordertolimitlegmovementanddecreasethechanceofinjurytothedriverandpassenger.
SIRSystemAIRBAGIndicator
TheSIRsystemAIRBAGindicator,locatedintheinstrumentcluster,isusedtonotifythedriverofSIR
systemmalfunctionsandtoverifythattheinflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnosticmodule(SDM)is
communicatingwiththeinstrumentcluster.WhentheignitionisturnedON,theinflatablerestraintsensing
anddiagnosticmoduleissuppliedwithignitionpositivevoltage.Theinstrumentclusterwillmomentarilyturn
ontheSIRsystemAIRBAGindicator.Whiletheindicatorison,theinflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnostic
moduleconductstestsonallSIRsystemcomponentsandcircuits.Ifnomalfunctionsaredetectedthe
inflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnosticmodulewillcommunicatewiththeinstrumentclusterthroughthe
serialdatacircuitandcommandtheSIRsystemAIRBAGindicatorOFF.Theinflatablerestraintsensingand
diagnosticmoduleprovidescontinuousmonitoringoftheairbagcircuitsbyconductingasequenceofchecks.
Ifamalfunctionisdetectedtheinflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnosticmodulewillstoreadiagnostic
troublecode(DTC)andcommandtheinstrumentclustertoilluminatetheSIRsystemAIRBAGindicatorvia
serialdata.ThepresenceofaSIRsystemmalfunctioncouldresultinnondeploymentoftheairbagsor
deploymentinconditionslessseverethanintended.TheSIRsystemAIRBAGindicatorwillremainONuntil
themalfunctionhasbeenrepaired.
InflatableRestraintSensingandDiagnosticModule(SDM)
Theinflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnosticmodule(SDM)isamicroprocessorandthecontrolcenterfor
thesupplementalinflatablerestraint(SIR)system.Theinflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnosticmodule
containsinternalsensorsalongwithexternalimpactsensors,mountedatstrategiclocationsonthevehicle.
Intheeventofacollision,theinflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnosticmodulecomparesthesignalsfrom
theinternalandexternalimpactsensorstoavaluestoredinmemory.Whenthegeneratedsignalsexceed
thestoredvalue,theinflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnosticmodulewillcausecurrenttoflowthroughthe
appropriatedeploymentloopstodeploytheairbags.Theinflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnosticmodule
recordstheSIRsystemstatuswhenadeploymentoccursandilluminatestheSIRsystemAIRBAGindicator
locatedintheinstrumentcluster.Theinflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnosticmoduleperformscontinuous
diagnosticmonitoringoftheSIRsystemelectricalcomponentsandcircuitrywhentheignitionisturnedON.If
theinflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnosticmoduledetectsamalfunction,aDTCwillbestoredandthe
inflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnosticmodulewillrequesttheinstrumentclustertoilluminatetheSIR
systemAIRBAGindicator,notifyingthedriverthatamalfunctionexists.Intheeventthatignitionpositive
voltageislostduringacollision,theinflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnosticmodulemaintainsa23volt
loopreservefordeploymentoftheairbags.ItisimportantwhendisablingtheSIRsystemforservicingor
rescueoperationstoallowthe23voltloopreservetodissipate,whichcouldtakeupto1minute.
AirBags

Thisvehiclecontains8airbags.The8airbagsarelocatedinthedriversteeringwheel(dualairbags),
passengerinstrumentpanel(passengerside)(dualairbags),driverseatside(Bpillar),passengerseatside
(Bpillar),driversideknee,passengersideknee,leftroofrail,andrightroofrail.Airbagscontainahousing,
inflatableairbag,twoinitiatingdevices(ifdualairbags),canisterofgasgeneratingmaterialand,insome
cases,storedcompressedgas.Thedeploymentloopssupplycurrenttodeploytheairbags.Thesteering
wheelandpassengerinstrumentpanelairbagshavetwostagesofdeployment,whichvariestheamountof
restrainttotheoccupantaccordingtothecollisionseverity.Formoderatefrontalcollisionstheairbags
deployatlessthanfulldeploymentwhichconsistsofstage1oftheairbag.Formoreseverefrontalcollisions
afulldeploymentisinitiatedwhichconsistsofstage1andstage2oftheairbag.Thecurrentpassingthrough
theairbagsignitethematerialinthecanisterproducingarapidgenerationofgasandissomecases,the
releaseofcompressedgas.Thegasproducedfromthisreactionrapidlyinflatestheairbag.Oncetheairbag
isinflateditquicklydeflatesthroughtheairbagventholesand/orthebagfabric.Ashortingbar(ifequipped)
islocatedintheconnector.Thesteeringcolumnandkneebolstersaredesignedtoabsorbenergyand
compressduringfrontalcollisionsinordertolimitlegmovementanddecreasethechanceofinjurytothe
driverandpassenger.
SeatBeltPretensioners(Buckle)
Theseatbeltpretensioners(driverandpassenger)consistofahousing,seatbeltbucklepretensioner
(locatedintheBpillar),seatbeltwebbing,aninitiator,andacanisterofgasgeneratingmaterials.The
initiatorispartoftheseatbeltpretensionerdeploymentloop.Whenthevehicleisinvolvedinacollisionof
sufficientforce,theinflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnosticmodulecausescurrenttoflowthroughtheseat
beltdeploymentloopstotheinitiator.Currentpassingthroughtheinitiatorignitesthematerialinthecanister
producingarapidgenerationofgas.Thegasproducedfromthisreactiondeploystheseatbeltbuckle
pretensionerswhichremovesalloftheslackintheseatbelts.Dependingontheseverityofthecollision,the
seatbeltbucklepretensionersmaydeploywithoutthefrontairbagsdeploying,ortheywilldeploy
immediatelybeforethefrontairbagsdeploy.Ashortingbar(ifequipped)islocatedintheconnector.
ImpactSensors
Thisvehiclecontains4impactsensors.The4impactsensorsarelocatedinthefrontofthevehicle(2,left
andright),and2intheBpillars(leftandright).Theimpactsensorscontainasensingdevicewhichmonitors
vehicleaccelerationandvelocitychangestodetectsidecollisionsthataresevereenoughtowarrantairbag
deployment.Theimpactsensorsarenotpartofthedeploymentloop,butinsteadprovideinputtothe
inflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnosticmodule.Theinflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnosticmodule
containsamicroprocessorthatperformscalculationsusingthemeasuredaccelerationsandcomparesthese
calculationstoavaluestoredinmemory.Whenthegeneratedcalculationsexceedthestoredvalue,the
inflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnosticmodulewillcausecurrenttoflowthroughthedeploymentloops
deployingtheappropriateairbags.
DriverSeatPositionSensor
Thedriverseatpositionsensorisusedtodeterminetheproximityofafrontdriverseatpositionwithrespect
tothefrontairbag.Thedriverseatpositionsensorinterfaceswiththeinflatablerestraintsensingand
diagnosticmodule(SDM).Thestateoftheseatpositionsensorallowstheinflatablerestraintsensingand
diagnosticmoduletodisablestage2ofthefrontairbagforafrontseatthatisforwardofthe
forward/rearwardpointintheseattracktravel.Theseatpositionsensorisahalleffectsensorthatis
mountedontheoutboardseattrackofthedriverseat.Theseattrackincludesametalbracketthatshunts
theseatpositionsensormagneticcircuitcreating2statesofseatposition,theshuntedstaterepresentsa
forwardseatpositionandthenonshuntedstaterepresentsarearwardposition.Theseatpositionsensor
provides2currentranges,onerangefortheshuntedstateandasecondrangeforanonshuntedstatewhich
areinputstotheinflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnosticmodule.Whentheinflatablerestraintsensingand
diagnosticmodulereceivesinputfromaseatpositionsensorthatstate1thresholdisreached(seatis
rearward),theinflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnosticmodulewillenablestage2deployment.Whenstate
2thresholdisreached(seatisforward),theinflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnosticmodulewilldisable
stage2deploymentonthesidetheseatisforward.Theinflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnosticmodule
monitorstheseatpositionsensorcircuitandifafaultisdetected,theinflatablerestraintsensingand
diagnosticmodulewillsetcodeB0079anddisablestage2frontaldeployment.
PassengerSeatPositionSensor
Thepassengerseatpositionsensorisnotusedtoenableordisablestage2deploymentoftheinstrument
panelairbag.
PassengerPresenceDetectionSystemandPassengerAirBagIndicator
Note:Thispassengerpresencedetectionsystemsystemcanbeservicedbyreplacingtheindividual
components(sensingmatormodule).Afterrepairingorreplacinganypassengerpresencedetection

systemcomponent,orremovingthepassengerseatcoverorfoam,thepreloadtestmustbe
performedinordertofunctionproperly.
Thepassengerpresencedetectionsystem(PPS)isusedtomonitorthetypeofoccupantthatissittinginthe
frontpassengerseatandcommunicatethestatustotheinflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnosticmodule
(SDM).Theinflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnosticmodulethenusesthisinformationtodetermine
whethertoenableorsuppressthedeploymentofthepassengerinstrumentpanelairbag.Thepassenger
presencedetectionsystemconsistsofanelectroniccontrolmodule,asensormatintheseat,and
PASSENGERAIRBAGON/OFFindicators.Themoduleismountedundertheseatpanandthesensingmatis
assembledbetweentheseatfoamcushionandtheseatpan.Pressureonthesensingmatisconvertedinto
anelectricalsignalthatthemodulereadsanddeterminesthepassengersclassification.Thepassenger
presencedetectionsystemmodulesendsanenable/disableserialdatasignaltotheinflatablerestraint
sensinganddiagnosticmodule.Theinflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnosticmodulewillnotifythe
customeroftheenable/disablestatusbyilluminatingoneofthePASSENGERAIRBAGON/OFFindicator.The
passengerpresencedetectionsystemmonitorsitselfforfaultsandwilldisplaysdiagnostictroublecodes
(DTCs)onthescantool.Whenafaultisdetected,thepassengerpresencemodulesendsoutamessageto
theinflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnosticmodule.Theinflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnosticmodule
respondsbysendingacommandmessagetotheinstrumentpanelclustertoilluminatetheSIRsystemAIR
BAGindicator.
SeatBeltIndicators
Theseatbeltindicatorsarecontrolledthroughtheinflatablerestraintsensinganddiagnosticmodule(SDM).
