Desik, Slavko. "The Importance of Having Role Models In Your Life." Lifestyle Updated.
Lifestyle Updated, 2015. Web. 20 Oct. 2016.
Desik talks about how having a role model in ones life can be one of the most crucial
aspects on the path to self-improvement. Since we are only human, it is a struggle for
many to leave their comfort zones, but role models are something that can help others
find motivation to try different things in their life or overcome hard challenges. One of
the reasons for having a role model in your life is they could possibly change your view
point on something entirely and open a whole new stand point on something for you.
Also, another benefit of having a role model is they can act as your daily life coach, and
they can give meaning to someones life by giving them daily inspiration to accomplish
goals much like how the role model has. Anyone can be a role model, but the difference
of a misleading and good one can be found in ones own personal views and wants that
they want from a role model. Also it is good to have multiple role models in your life
because not one person is perfect and you can get different aspects of modeling for
yourself.

The source does come from a from a personal viewpoint on a sort of blog almost website
but this topic of role modeling is very broad and there are many viewpoints of a proper role
model since it is personal preference for each person. This post by Desik does a good job at
explaining multiple different preferences people may have or look for in a role model which hits
several main points. The speak is Desik and the audience is anyone who wants to be educated on
what they seek personally from a role model and what they might look for in one so they can
self-improve themselves.
In my inquiry project, I want to discuss on what people might find as a good role model
for themselves and the different ways one might deem as proper and I also want to talk about the
ways a role model can help improve peoples lives in many ways. Desiks article on role models
and their importance does a wonderful job of discussing these points and gives many different
views on what people might look for in a role model and how they can improve their own lives
from having one. This will work well for two of my main points and to also help explain the
variability in what people expect and are looking to gain from.

Last Chance High. Prod. Vice News. Perf. Students. Vice News. Vice News, 16 Apr. 2014. Web.
28 Oct. 2016.
Last Chance High is a documentary that is put up into several episodes that shows the life
of students that are considered having poor behavior issues. Montefiore Academy is the last
chance of school for many of the youth that goes there, if they get kicked out of Montefiore then
there is little hope for the future of these children. The documentary follows several students and
what goes on in their daily lives at school and at home. Along with this it also follows the lives

of a few teachers who make a huge impact in the lives of these kids that struggle to deal with
situations in a proper matter.
Episodes 3 and 6 I found to be the most relevant to what I am doing for my research
project. Episode 3 follows the life of Spanky and it talks about the many issues he has in school
and at home. Coach Williams is a big influence on Spankys life and other students such as
Cortez. He gives them motivation not only as their basketball coach but as a mentor for life,
trying his best to help these students advance to a better school and to become successful in their
own lives. In Episode 6 Rev. Robin Hood, who also works at Montefiore, can take Cortez to see
his father who has been in prison for almost all of Cortezs life. These episodes that focus on
Rev. Hood and Coach Williams that help these students in any way that they can is what is
important to my research because they are being role models to the kids. Also Cortezs father
being in jail also shows what the absence of the role model of a father and how that can influence
childrens lives.
Vice News is more of an immersive online news source. It is often very reliable with its
documentaries. This one does a good job of focusing on the staff and students and it shows what
goes on. This documentary ended up getting the school closed because it the state of Ohio did
not want parents to send their kids there because of the admitted stories from students.

Schultz, Mark. Foxcatcher: The True Story of My Brother's Murder, John Du Pont's Madness,
and the Quest for Olympic Gold. New York, NY: Dutton, 2014. Print.
Foxcatcher is a book and a movie that shows the murder of the gold medalist wrestler
Dave Schultz. The story progresses with his brother Mark Schultz who is also a gold medalist

wrestler and how he partners with John du Pont to create a legendary USA wrestling team. The
story captures intense moments and the importance of a coach in an athletes life.
I can use the information that talks about the importance of a coach in an athletes life.
This quotes is specifically used in the movies trailer because it focuses on how certain coaches
can be good role models (mikes brother Dave) for Mark and how certain ones can end up
influencing them the wrong way (John du Pont). I will be able to use this info on the importance
of a coach to talk about how role models can influence athletes, to show the difference between
bad and good, and to show the effects of different role models.
The book is written by Mark Schultz and is supposed to reveal the true story of what
happened. Though some things may be deemed as not true by others but, you must believe to go
with his prospective of his own life. The book is more credible than the movie. Also, the book
was also authored by David Thomas. Published by New York Times.

Debate. "Are Celebrities Good Role Models?" The Premier Online Debate Website. Debate.org,
n.d. Web. 02 Nov. 2016.
This is an open debate on whether famous people are good role models on the website
debate.org. Some people go to say that they are by raising awareness to things such as breast
cancer and that it is good that it is shown that even they are not perfect. Some people go to say
that they are not good role models because they cause too much drama and that children end up
wanting to be just like them and follow them even in the bad steps they take in life.
I find this useful to me because it elaborates on both sides of the argument whether
famous people are good role models. I can use this info to talk about the good and the bad. Also,

when you look through the different post a large majority is of people who think role models are
good which I want to focus on the good in role models for my paper.
This is open to anyone to post; some things may be false. Most of the time people only
comment on something when they have background information or do the research themselves.
If something is found as false people can report it and the website will take it down.

Kohl, Sheila. "Modeling Positive Behavior in the Classroom." National Education Association.
National Education Association, n.d. Web. 30 Oct. 2016.
This article talks about the importance of teachers and how they are role models every
day of their life. This articles shows the different ways that teachers can display themselves to
students to lead them in a better path. The article focuses mainly on three points, showing
respect, thinking out loud, and showing your human side. This a guideline on what a teacher
should try and do in a class room setting and outside of that.
This is useful to me because I can use the information on how to be a good role model.
Also, I can talk about the teachers perspective and how they are role models. The different
strategies that are suggested are the most important aspect though.
Sheila Kohl has taught for 14 years in Wisconsin and has earned National Board
Certification as a Generalist-Middle Childhood. The National Education Association almost
always publishes reliable articles from reliable people.
