Expanded Outline of Todays Lesson

Bell Ringer
Life Timeline (Line-up)
Students will be distributed a slip of paper with a number on it. The instructor will then explain
that this number is representative of an age. The student will then write an event that might take
place in someones life at that age. Example may be buying a car.

Once the students have written down their events, they will tape them, in order, on a timeline in
the front of the board.

The instructor will then explain that together, the students just created (Marys) entire life. The
instructor will then read through all of the events that happened during Marys life. (Teachers will
be prepared to place extra slips with exciting events into the timeline if needed)

While the teacher is reading through the lifespan, they will emphasize good decisions made by
Mary. Once the life has completed, the teacher will reiterate the fact that Mary was a great
student, made good decisions, and lived a healthy life. BUT unfortunately, Mary did not get to
experience all of these amazing life events due to one mistake - an underage drinking incident.
Mary was at a party when she was 16. Some of her friends convinced her to binge drink for the
first time. She became intoxicated and made the poor decision to get into a car with a friend
who had been drinking as well because she was afraid to call her parents. The driver lost
control of the car, and Mary lost her life. The driver now faces 10-22 years prison time and a
mark on their permanent record.

Introduction to the Lesson (Think, Pair, Share) (Post-It)

Ask students if they know what internal/external influences are and if they can provide an
example?
Internal - motivation from within
External - an outer source - like friend or family
Todays lesson will focus on the influences of alcohol and drug use and abuse.
Students will pair up or create a group of 3 in which they will brainstorm some internal and
external influences that may have caused Mary to make the decisions she made. Students will
work together to list as many effects as possible.
What influenced her to drink alcohol?
Why did she binge drink?
Why did she decide to get in the car?

All of these influences led to a poor decision, move into discussion

Analyze the effects of poor decisions on:

Job/Career
Financial
Relationships
Health
Emotional
Poor decisions can lead to jail time, health issues, even death.
Although it is popular, use of alcohol and drugs can have serious consequences on yourself and
those around you. Today we will be talking about drugs and alcohol and the toll they take on
your life...

Content & Instructional Strategie

Teen Alcohol Use Statistics (Lecture/Q&A)
People aged 12 to 20 years drink 11% of all alcohol consumed in the United States. More than
90% of this alcohol is consumed in the form of binge drinks
In 2010, there were approximately 189,000 emergency rooms visits by persons under age 21
for injuries and other conditions linked to alcohol
Consequences of Drug/Alcohol Use (Lecture/Q&A)
School problems
Higher absence, failing grades
Social Problems
Fighting, lack of participation in youth activities
Legal Problems
Arrest (DUI, Injuring others)
Illness
Higher risk for physical or sexual assault
Death
Excessive drinking is responsible for more than 4,300 deaths among underage youth each year
Drug/Alcohol Influences
Internal Influences
Beliefs, attitudes, motivation, and needs.
May believe it will make them feel good, want to show rebellion
External Influences
People, culture, media, law/policy, life circumstances
Family, Friends, etc...

Appeal of Drugs and Alcohol (Lecture/Q&A)

Pop culture
Musicians lyrics give image that using drugs and alcohol is cool
I took a pill in Ibiza - Mike Posner
Celebrity endorsements; Selling own brand of alcohol
Mila Kunis - Jim Bean Commercial
Popularity, fitting in with mainstream
Influence of peers heavily weighs on the decision of whether or not a teen will drink.
Maturity
Teens see themselves as more mature when partaking in an adult practice.
Role models

Teens may look up to an older brother or sister, parents, celebrities, friends, etc...
Media/Advertisements
Media makes drinking look fun, this sparks teen interest/curiosity

In-Class Learning Activity (Gimmicks and Gizmos) (Think, Pair, Share)

Drug/Alcohol Ads - Analyzing the Influences of Advertisements
Students will be presented with different advertisements containing items such as alcohol or
nicotine. The teacher will have one ad on a slide of the PowerPoint at a time. Students will be
allowed 1-2 minutes to analyze the ad and fill out their worksheet individually. The teacher will
then switch to another ad, and the students will follow the same procedure.
After all ads have been analyzed, students will move themselves into a large circle around the
perimeter of the room (or sitting on desks if allowed). The instructor will put the first ad back on
the screen. The instructor will then provide a student with an object and the student with the
object will have the opportunity to talk about the message they thought the ad gave (going off of
the questions they answered on the worksheet). They will then toss the object to another
student who will answer the next question of who the ad is targeting. When a student receives
the object, they may offer a different answer to the same question, or to the next question on the
worksheet. The object will continue to be passed around the circle until all ads have been
talked about/all students received a turn.

In-Class Learning Activity/Project: Dead Celebrity Project (Classroom Posters)

Each student will receive an index card with a preselected celebrity on the card.
Instructor will ask students if they can figure out what all of these celebrities have in common?
Students should be able to figure out that these are all dead celebrities, all of which have died
from a drug/alcohol related incident. (If they dont make the connection, reveal the information)
The student is responsible for researching their celebrity and find out/include the following
criteria:
Name
Date of Birth
Date of Death (Age at passing)
Overview of Celebrity with at least 10 personal facts
Major professional contributions from celebrity
What drug caused death, and the specific circumstances behind that death
The students will be distributed construction paper tombstones. The tombstones will need to:

include all above information (Name, Date of Birth, Date of Death)

Be colorful
Be neat and legible
Include celebrity photo
