Process Paper
For this years NHD, the theme in taking a stand. Initially we struggled finding a topic to
fit this theme. We didnt want to do a topic many people were going to do like Muhammad Ali or
Rosa Parks. Eventually, after further research on about this theme we settled on Curt Flood
because our group is composed of huge sports fans and because many people do not know who
he is. He was an major league outfielder who spent the majority of his career with the St. Louis
Cardinals. When he felt his rights were denied as a major league player, he decided to do
something about it.
Next, we needed to decide what type of project that we wanted to do. We decided to do
the same thing we did last year and do a website. We received a good grade last year so we
decided to stick with it. We feel that a website helps us to organize our information better and
helps us to fully show the information that we gathered.
To begin conducting our research we first began by being very broad and getting an
overview of what he did. Then we tried to find short and long term impacts from the actions that
he performed. He was very influential on the game of baseball so we tried to find as many ways
to see how he had a lasting impact on the game. Next, our research continued with looks at other
things occurring during that time period. We needed to get historical context to further
understand Curt Floods efforts. Then we tried to find an interview. We tried to find any direct
links to Curt Flood but were unable to do so. Next, we tried to contact baseball analysts who
work on television but again received no answers. Because of this, we decided to interview
Sophies aunt, Christine Buckley, who used to work for Major League Baseball. Someone who

used to work for Major League Baseball will understand how Curt Flood greatly impacted the
sport.
This project perfectly relates to the NHD theme because Curt Flood took a stand against
the MLB when he felt that he was being treated as a slave. He wanted the right to be able to play
for the team of his choice and refused to be traded to a different team. He was challenging the
reserve clause in the MLB and was fighting for what he thought was right for himself and his
colleagues. When he was denied his right to choose his team he stood up against Major League
Baseball even though he knew it would hurt his career.
