Objectives/Goals
Students will be able to play Jolly Old St. Nicholas on his or her instrument from
learning the song by rote.
Students will be able to play and distinguish the difference between piano and forte
dynamics.
Title of the Music Selection
I will be using Jolly Old St. Nicholas
Procedure:
Students will have a small discussion about Christmas and singing Christmas Carols
Students will listen as I model Jolly Old St. Nicholas on solfege syllables.
Students will repeat after me as we learn Jolly Old St. Nicholas with solfege.
Students will listen as I model Jolly Old St. Nicholas on my trombone
Students will play Jolly Old St. Nicholas on their instruments with me.
Students will listen to me play Jolly Old St. Nicholas again, but I will exaggerate the
forte and piano dynamics.
Students will analyze what I did differently when I played.
Students will play Jolly Old St. Nicholas with me with the newly added dynamics.
Students will play Jolly Old St. Nicholas one more time without me with the new
dynamics.
Closure/Review

To conclude the teaching, I will remind students what piano and forte dynamics are and
that when Christmas time comes around, they have a song that they can play on their
instrument for their family!
