GMO and its effects on consumers
Eating is critical, it is additionally imperative to practice good eating habits. The vast
majority eats without having any worries; they are not addressing or exploring what they are
nourishing themselves or their family. A considerable measure of that needs to do with their
monetary dependability, not having room schedule-wise to set up a feast because of their tedious
work routine, likewise absence of learning and training on what they are expending. In light of
livestrong.com's article composed by Joshua Duvauchelle "Advantages and disadvantages of
GMO sustenance "GMO foods are genetically modified organism that have had new genes
from other organism added to their existing genes. According to the narrative "Nourishment
Inc" 80% of the nourishment that we are expending contain (GMO) Generically Modified
Organism.

Some of the products that contain GMO are cereal, meat, dairy products,

vegetable oil, rice potatoes, tomatoes, peas. The U.S.D.A and the F.D.A are failing at their jobs.
This fact is evident due to the large amount of contaminated produce found all over the U.S. In
the past, the food industrys goal was to provide their customers with a high quality piece of
meat, which was not tainted with manure, feces, and blood. There is not enough safety

inspections being performed by the U.S.D.A and because of that, cases of salmonella have
increased exponentially. Based on the documentary Food Inc in 1972, the FDA conducted
50,000 food safety inspections. In 2006, they conducted 9,164. This kind of disparity between
inspections is not acceptable. Serious revisions need to be made to the whole processing system
lest we risk increasing the chance of the American people becoming infected with E.coli.
Food allergies are a major concern and negative effect of GMO. Much of the food
allergies that occur are as a result of the food that we eat. Since genetically engineered crops are
in most of the foods we eat, it is understandable why people are concerned. When the body gets
exposed to unfamiliar substances, it reacts with an over-sensitive immune system. This is how
allergic reactions in the body occur. Genetically modified crops such as soybeans, can create new
allergies because the imported genes from it, produces a new protein that the body does not
recognize.
The peoples champion and defender have become complacent over the past years and do
not exert their muscle and influence over the food industry as if they used to. This is due to the
fact many high-level government positions within the F.D.A, and other regulatory agencies are
being occupied by people who have been previously affiliated with the food industry. Take for
example, Michael R. Taylor, who was appointed by president Obama as deputy commissioner for
foods and veterinary medicine at the F.D.A He previously was the former vice president of public
policy at Monsanto. (Multinational Corporation who produces GMO crops) as a lawyer. We
cannot allow these revolving door styles of politics to keep persisting. It is affecting America
health big time. We have very little control over this matter, and it is unfair. It is harming the
citizen who should have the right to have immediate access to taintless produce.

The feedlot that the cattle, swine, etc. are being raised on is not conducive to raising healthy
animals. The animals are forced to wade around through ankle high manure for days on end
until they are brought to slaughter. They are also forced to subsist on a corn only diet. This is
due to the fact corn is subsidized by the US government and it is cheaper to feed animals while
also fattening them up at the same time. Cows are not biologically designed to live off corn;
their diet should consist of only grass. Research shows this change of diet is causing a mutated
strain of e.coli to form in the cows stomach that is acid resistant. This strain of E.coli is known
as 0157:H7 that was stated in the movie (Food Inc.).

Kevins law was nicknamed in memory of two-year-old Kevin kowalcyk of Colorado,

who died in 2001 after developing hemolyticumeric syndrome due to eating a hamburger
contaminated with E.coli 0157:H7. If this strain were to infect the nation, the results would be
disastrous due to how toxic it is. What Kevin law does is that, it strengthens the US
governments ability to prevent contaminated meat and poultry from entering the food supply.

The feedlot system needs to abolish and a switch to the organic method of farming needs to be
made by farmers.
According to (Food Inc.), one in three Americans born after 2000 will contract early onset
diabetes. Amongst minorities, their rates will be 1 in 2. This rate is astonishing and it has never
been this high before. One of the factors causing this is the high prices of fresh food compared
to the relatively cheap cost of fast food. For a family living check to check it makes more sense
to just purchase the fast food for their family since it saves them money, but the cons like weight
gain, potential diabetes, etc. far outweigh the pros. Another factor is the second-rate food that is
being served to the youth is causing this. Everything is saturated with sugar to high capacities.
If you take one 12-ounce can of regular soda, and starts reading the info on it you will see that it
has about 150 calories, and 40 grams of carbohydrate. This is the same amount of carbohydrates
in 10 teaspoons of sugar. It is incredibly unhealthy for someone to receive that much sugar in
one dose. The presence of high fructose corn syrup in the majority of our product is what is
giving rise to the type 2 diabetes epidemic. Consumers need to start demanding the removal of
this putrid substance in their food if they wish to reduce the chances of early onset diabetes.
They also need to request healthier lunch options available for kids at school that provide a truly
balanced diet.

Some also believe that GMO has its pros, they believe the good outweigh the bad, According to
the Dr Leigh Erin writer of the article The Pros & Cons of GMO,

Desir5

She believes the Pros are that GMO plants are supposed to allow farmers

to spend less money producing more food.

Use fewer pesticides and herbicides.

Do less tiling to remove weeds, thereby protecting the soil.

Joshua Duvauchelle article on livestrong.com also states some of the Pros of GMO,
stating that genetically modified food have been modified to make them more resistant to insect
pests, a toxic bacterium can be added to crops to make them insect repellent, yet safe for human
use.
A multitude of changes needs to take place in the food industry in order for America to
gain their trust back. These changes should result in allowing America to eat healthy, and
without a concern. There is a high precedence on satisfying the business owners and not the
customers. This mindset needs to cease. A healthy relationship needs to be formed with the
customers and a mutual agreement has to be made that they will provide the healthiest food to
the utmost of their ability. Farming needs to go back to what is what before the system was
industrialized. Industrialization is what killed the trust between the farmers and their clients.
Animals also need to be weaned off corn. It is not healthy for them and they need to start eating
what they traditionally did in nature. Former food executives cannot be allowed to hold
positions where they regulate the industry they used to work for. They may have a bias and pass
laws that are actually detrimental to their constituents the same people they were hired to help. If
all of these changes are made, we can fix the erroneous errors within the food industry within a
few years and the people can eat their food safely not being concerned about pesticides and other
harmful things.

The U.S.D.A and the F.D.A needs to start doing their jobs and starts providing food that
is not contaminated with manures, feces, and blood. America needs to glance around, and see
what is going on inside the sustenance business. Customers need to stand firm and begin
requesting the evacuation of rotten substances in their sustenance so as to stay away from early
onset diabetes. They have to do their examination of what they are eating and the circumstances
and end results of devouring it, they should be extremely cautious with GMO's, e. coli, and other
hurtful things in their nourishment.
