Planning for Routines

Routine: Spelling
Timeframe: 140 minutes total.
Date/s to be implemented: Every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday.
Key focus for the routine
Improving vocabulary and developing spelling strategies
Curriculum area: English
Topic/Strand: Language/ Phonics and word
knowledge
Core Content: Understand how to use knowledge of known words, word origins including some Latin
and Greek roots, base words, prefixes, suffixes, letter patterns and spelling generalisations to spell new
words including technical words (ACELA1526)
The lesson outcomes/objectives
By the end of this activity students should be able to:
- Spell new words introduced to them
- Use learnt strategies to spell unknown words

Word lists provided weekly from appropriate book.
MONDAY 50 MINUTES
YELLOW GROUP 1
Yellow group 1 to go with Rachel to sort their words and record
them into their literacy books. Rachel to lead and assist When
finished, students are to write spelling sentences for their words.
Rachel to guide.
YELLOW GROUP 2
Yellow group 2 to go with Claire to sort their words and record
them into their literacy books. When finished, students are to
write spelling sentences for their words.
GREEN GROUP
Green group to go with Nathan to sort their words and record
them into their literacy books. Nathan to lead and assist. When
finished, students are to write spelling sentences for their words.
BLUE GROUP
Blue group to write spelling sentences for their words in their
literacy books. After green group has finished sorting their
words, blue group to go with Nathan to sort their words and
record them in their literacy books. Nathan to lead and assist.
TUESDAY 30 MINUTES
All groups to sort their words alphabetically and record in their
literacy books. When finished, students are to write spelling
sentences for their words.
THURSDAY 30 MINUTES
All groups to look for and write definitions of their spelling
words in their literacy books. When finished, students are to
write spelling sentences for their words.
FRIDAY 30 MINUTES
YELLOW GROUP 1
Yellow group 1 to go with Claire. Claire to test students on their
words and mark.
YELLOW GROUP 2
Yellow group 2 to go with Claire. Claire to test students on their
words and mark.
GREEN GROUP
Green group to go with Karen. Karen to test students on their
words and mark.
BLUE GROUP
Blue group to go with Nathan. Nathan to test students on their
words and mark.
All results to be recorded in excel spreadsheet. Students who get
all correct will be rewarded 10 marbles.
