Project Title: Numerical Simulation of Gas-Liquid Two Phase Flow Induced Heat Transfer

using OpenFOAM

Abstract
General discussion on various parameter, functioning and processing of Open-FOAM (Field
Operation and Manipulation). Pre-processing, solution and Post-processing for solving any
numerical simulation. The problems discussed in the report are: Lid Driven Cavity, Flow through
elbow, heat transfer through solid plate and flow through a duct.
In Lid Driven Cavity, the flow was assumed laminar and solved for a uniform mesh using the
icoFoam solver for laminar, isothermal, incompressible flow. Later the flow Reynolds number was
increased and the pisoFoam solver was used for turbulent, isothermal, incompressible flow. Flow
through Elbow problem illustrates the simulation of a 2D elbow structure having two inputs and one
output for fluid flow. The flow is assumed to be incompressible, laminar, transient, single phase and
Newtonian. This is done with the help of icoFoam solver which is a transient solver for
incompressible laminar flow of Newtonian Fluids.
Heat transfer through 2D solid plate problem using laplacianFoam solver. Dirichlet, Robin and
Mixed boundary conditions for transient state system were considered for the simulation. The solver
is applicable for thermal diffusion in a solid and solves a simple Laplace equation of heat transfer.
Single phase and Two phase flow simulations considering a 2D channel. SimpleFoam and icoFoam
solvers already present in the openFOAM were used for velocity and pressure simulation. To study
the temperature profile new solvers were created based on these pre-existing solvers. For an
incompressible Newtonian fluid both laminar and turbulence modelling were done. For two phase
closed channel turbulent flow RAS k-epsilon model is used. InterFoam solver is used in this case,
which is a two-phase solver for incompressible, isothermal and immiscible fluids using a VOF
(volume of fluid) based interface capturing approach.
