Common Core Standards:

Reading Standards for Literature: #10: By the end of the year, read and comprehend
literature, including stories, dramas, and poems, at the high end of grades 68 text
complexity band independently and proficiently

Objectives:

Students will be able to achieve sustained, well-paced independent reading of a book of


their choosing.
Students will be able to develop more vocabulary and higher reading skills through
frequent S.S.R.

Purpose: You are going to read your chosen books silently for the remainder of the period, in
order to improve your reading skills and work towards that 400 page minimum by the end of the
grading period.
Input: Pull out your books and begin reading silently. You will read for the remainder of the
period.
Independent Practice: Students will read silently and independently for 20 minutes.
Assessment: At the end of the grading period, students will turn in a handout filled out with the
following information:

The titles and authors of the books they read


How many pages they read for each book

By tracking their reading, students will remain accountable for the number of pages that they
have to read outside of class, and it will encourage them to read more frequently. Students will
be scored based on whether they completed the required amount of reading
