QUESTION 1
a) Define following equipment and give each an example
i. measuring instrument
graduated calibrated instruments which are used to determine the actual dimensions of the work
piece for the comparison with the desire size.
ii. gauges
equipment used to determine if the work piece is good or bad result without providing the actual
dimension.
iii. precision instrument
precision instrument are those which have ability to measure part accurately. Ex; Micrometers and
vernier caliper.
iv. non-precision instrument
non-precision instrument are limited to the measurements of parts to a visible line graduation on the
instrument used, such as ruler.
(8 marks)
b) Give four (4) factors which contributed to measurement error
The measuring device itself
Method of measurement
Environment factor such as temperature, dust, moisture, air pressures
Human factors such as concentration and judgment, attention, practice and activity of vision
( 4 marks)
c) What are the advantages of vernier height gauge over regular vernier caliper
accurately measuring the height of components, using the surface table as the datum
can be attached to scriber for direct marking of measurement

QUESTION 2
a) Define chiseling operation
working on materials with a sharpened wedge-shaped tool (chisel)

b) Give two (2) examples of the chiseling operation
to separate work (to split or divide workpieces) without removing chips (chipless)
to make rough cuts (chip removal)
( 2 marks)
c) Sketch the followings:
i. Countersink-drilled hole

(2 marks)
ii. Counterbore drilled hole

d) Explain how the cooling method using cutting fluid contributes to the drilling performance
better surface finish,
allow a higher cutting speed
extend the tool life.

QUESTION 3
a) Define
i. manual sawing
removal of small chips by means of many chisel-type cutting edges (teeth) arranged behind one another
along the narrow edge of a saw blade; a large number of these cutting edges are effective at the same time.
ii. reaming
Reaming is a process for enlarging, smoothing and l or accurately sizing existing holes by means of
multiedge fluted cutting tools called reamers.
iii. tapping
Tapping is the process of creating screw threads, called threading
