IHSAA - Pure Spirit. Pure Sport. Pure INDIANA!

Welcome to this
Championship Event
Since 1903, the Indiana High School Athletic Association has promoted the values of education based
athletics and was the primary reason for its formation
over 100 years ago.
It has been an honor
for our Association to
partner with member
schools in the promotion of these ideals.
The importance of this
mission is more critical
today than ever in our
history.
Currently in our state,
over 160,000 students
from 408 different IHSAA member schools
choose to participate
in interscholastic athletics. These fortunate students
absorb a variety of life lessons as they develop from
adolescents to mature young adults. The opportunity
to learn self-discipline, teamwork, sacrifice, loyalty
and commitment are attributes that have come to be
known as the other half of education. The mastery
of these characteristics retains dramatic impact as
these young people assume leadership roles in our
society.
A former high school principal once shared with each
of his incoming freshman classes that you will only
take away from high school what you leave behind.
The students that perform before you today are
leaving their absolute best behind for generations of
admirers to recall.
On behalf of the IHSAA Staff and Board of Directors, we welcome you to todays events. Education
based athletics which are pure, wholesome, and inexpensive reflecting local flavor and enthusiasm has
always been the objective. It is what we mean when
we say.. Pure Spirit, Pure Sport, Pure Indiana!
Cordially,

Bobby Cox
IHSAA Commissioner

Outstanding Official
Cary Schnick Honored as States Top Official
Cary Schnick of LaPorte is the recipient of the 2016
Interscholastic Athletic Officials Association Award for excellence in the sport of volleyball. Schnick will be honored in a
special ceremony at todays state finals.

Each year, the Indiana
High School Athletic Association, in cooperation with
the National Federation
of Interscholastic Officials
Association, recognizes
and honors an outstanding
official in each of 11 sports
during the school year.
During his career, Cary
has officiated 36 sectionals,
19 regionals, three semistates, and four state finals.
Schnick was selected

for this honor by a committee representing the officials

associations. In Indiana there are 24 associations made
up of men and women who assist in providing wholesome,
worthwhile, and healthy activities for the student athletes
in our state. Statewide, there are more than 8,000 officials
licensed by the IHSAA in 11 sports.
A licensed referee for 40 years, Schnick is a member
of the Hoosier Athletic Officials Association, for whom he
has served as a clinician. Cary, also an IHSAA clinician, is a
licensed referee in both baseball and softball as well.
Cary Schnick is a 1971 graduate of Elston High School
in Michigan City. He has retired from his occupation as
an electrician for NIPSCO, but he continues his work as a
volunteer fireman for the Center Twp. Fire Department a
role he has served for the past 38 years. Cary and his
wife Marilyn have been married for 41 years and have four
children: Rebecca (40), Robert (38), Allan (36), and Cory
(34).

Top-Ranked Indianapolis Cathedral completes Undefeated Season
The top-ranked volleyball team in the country made a great
case for itself as Indianapolis Cathedral swept sixth-ranked
Carroll of Fort Wayne, 3-0, for the IHSAA Class 4A Volleyball State Championship at Worthen Arena in Muncie.
Sitting a top the national rankings at MaxPreps.com since
September 16, the Fighting Irish finished off Carroll, 25-21,
25-13, 25-21, to complete a perfect 36-0 campaign and
became the 14th undefeated state champion in state
tournament history.
After falling in last years title match, the Irish returned
seven starters and took it all the way this season for the
schools seventh volleyball crown, third-most in state
annals.
All seven of Cathedrals state titles have come under the
guidance of coach Jean Kesterson who became the second
Indiana high school volleyball coach with as many and
second only to former Muncie Burris coach Steve Shondell
(21).
The Irish set a state finals record for hitting percentage
in a three-set match with a .352 clip thanks in part to Nia
Robinson and Megan Sloan who provided 15 and 11 kills,
respectively.
Jacqueline Quade led Carroll with 14 kills and Ellee Ruskaup added 12 digs on defense for the Chargers.

Providence Sweeps to Third Consecutive State Championship

In a battle of the top two ranked teams in Class 3A, it was
second-ranked Providence sweeping its way to a third
consecutive state championship in Ball State Universitys
Worthen Arena.
The Pioneers (37-3), playing in their first 3A championship
match after winning the last two years in 2A, scored on
more than 30 percent of their attacks and overwhelmed the
top-ranked Tigers, 25-20, 25-15, 25-16.
It was the 20th consecutive state tournament victory for
Providence and coach Terri Purichia dating back to 2013.
The Pioneers also extended their streak to an incredible 60
consecutive sets won in state tournament action ranking
second in state history. Only Muncie Burris 102 straight
from 1997 to 2003 ranks better.
Marissa Hornung led Providence with 19 kills in the match
followed by Jacquie Hornung with 14. Audrey Shannon, the
mental attitude award winner, led the team on the defensive
side with 13 digs in the match.
Yorktowns Kenzie Knuckles paced her team with 10 kills.
Mimi Arrington was the defensive leader with 15 digs followed by Jade York and Knuckles with 13 each.
