Claim: Psychotropic drugs should not be prescribed by just any health
care professional. Qualifier: Psychiatrists should be the only healthcare providers to be referred to as consult to diagnosis and prescribe cases of mental/behavioral health. Good reasons: Misdiagnosis can lead to substance abuse, suicide, and cases of psychotic outbreak. Warrants: Nurse practitioners, general practitioners, internists, primary care physicians, certified registered nurse anesthetists, and other advance practice nurses do not obtain the adequate knowledge of psychiatry and psychiatric pharmacology to properly diagnose, assess, and treat mental/behavioral health cases. Backing: Primary care physicians only do one clinical rotation for psychiatry in medical school where psychiatrists study this for 4 years. Evidence: The number of undiagnosed cases where psychotropic drugs were prescribed is significantly higher in non-psychiatry specialists. Authority: Denise Mann Conditions of Rebuttal: Some study psychiatry as a minor. Responses: Majority of them do not and subsequently misdiagnose and prescribe. Revision
I think that educating myself more on the counterargument will better
prepare me for my response to it. I can imagine that someone arguing against this, perhaps a primary care physician, would have much more reliable counter-argument. The only way I can improve my response is to better educate myself on the counter-argument itself.
