FIELDTRIP REPORT
At Ny.Menir Headoffice
Ungaran, Semarang, Central Java
Last week, I was in Ny.Menir headoffice in Ungaran, Semarang. It was November 30 th, with all my
classmates also with my lectures Mr.Rohlan and Ms.Muhar. The weather was nice and we left from the
Faculty at 7 a.m. We arrived on the place around 10 a.m. and welcomed nicely by the Ny.Menir employee.
The offices building wasnt very huge on my first sight but it were bigger, very artistic, and have a good
atmosphere inside.
Then we all came go inside to a hallroom and were getting welcoming words from Ny.Menir
employee. We got an intoductory about what is Ny.Menir, since when it was establihed, what is Jamu, the
history of Jamu, and many other things. The presenter was so nice and knew very much about Ny.Menir.
Ny.Menir established as a company since 1980. At the start, Ny.Menir were only collecting
medicinal plants to her own and for own use. At that time, her husband was experiencing stomachache and
she has to took care of her husband and the medication she were using was from medicinal plants which
recipes she got from a book. Soon after that, her husband became healthy again and some people were
hearing about the use of medicinal plants Ny.Menir used at that time. The recipes she got was from a book
which book written in Dutch language. The recipes were potent to cure almost all sicknesses at that time and
ever since, Ny.Menir were started making the medicinal recipes and sell it to her neighboor.
The bussiness were going well and there were so many demand from people who need medicinal
recipes and Ny.Menir started to think about make it as a company. Began from curing her husbands
stomachache, the company goes all its way until what the Ny.Menir we know now. Some partnerships were
made for the development of Ny.Menir company for example with Faculty of Biology, UGM, NGO, and
goverment.
After all the stories about Ny.Menir and the introduction about Jamu, we were told about many kinds
of medicinal plants. There are Kayu Angin, a plant originated in Indonesia that is useful to cure masuk
angin. But, Kayu Angin nowadays are facing problems for its development as an industrial medicine. Kayu
Angin is facing limited of cultivation, there are a few farmer who cultivate it and were not mass propagate.
Besides to harvest its material for its metabolic secondary product, it cost 20 year for optimum yield which
is takes time very long. There are many indigenous plants we just know that are facing mainly about
cultivation technique, processing of material, and distribution as industrial medicine. The problem also
comes because Indonesia dont have a regulation about the protection of indigenous medicinal plants. So, it
is a challenge for us, the students of Faculty of Agriculture, to make a better Agricultures sector in the
future.
