Art Criticism
The artist of the artwork "Dotted Dolphin" is named Erika Lopez. I can recognize that the
subject is a dolphin. Some elements I see are; curved lines, triangle shaped fins, black and white
color, areas that are darker than others, displays a dolphin jumping out of the water, poke-a-dot
texture, and the dolphin is heavier on the right side. Erika used a marker to do her stippling
technique.
The dominant element is the dolphin. The dolphin, as I stated before, is heavier on the
right side of the portrait, and there is a calm mood. The fins are in proportion with the dolphin's
body because they look just right. To create a pattern, the element of stippling is repetitive to
create value. My eyes are following the movement of the dolphin jumping out of water. The
stipple dots unify the water in the background, and also the dolphin itself.
I think this symbolizes peace and independents. The artwork reminds me of a feeling of
being alone, but thriving through everyday problems. Sometimes people have to rely on
themselves and learn how to live an independent life.
This artwork is a success because if you take time to notice what the artwork means,
many people can probably relate to it, and that's why I think this artwork is unique and has a
good style. The only improvement I would make would be to have some sort of design in the sky
like a sun to bring the artwork together.
