Develop a Unit

Generative Topic: Volcanos
Unit Goals:
1. Overview of World Volcanos. Put students in small groups, give
them a copy of a World Map without Volcanos. This will help
students understand the role and importance of volcanos in our
earths development and land mass. Then give each group a
copy of a World Map with Volcanoes. Discuss the difference and
importance of volcanos.
2. Teach how volcanoes form, the 4 major types of volcanoes,
rocks/minerals that are formed because of volcanoes.
3. Discuss types of eruptions, levels of damage at local and global
levels. Refer to the world map with volcanos.
4. View videos of volcanic eruptions. View one eruption that
illustrates damage at local level and one that shows global
damage.
5. Vocabulary. Give students a list of words. I will act out/ use
illustrations/ songs and other creative methods to give definitions
and the students will write their understanding of definitions,
followed by me reading the definitions, and they adjust their
written definitions.
6. Discuss the anatomy of a volcano. View Anatomy of a Volcano
and Volcanic Features interactive. Mad libs with volcanic
terms.
7. Go on a field trip to the lava tubes, where each student must use
3 vocabulary terms in conversation and/or discussions with me or
other classmates.
Final Performance:

8. Test assessment with terms, matching illustrations of different

types of volcanos. Written essay on lava tubes where they share


their knowledge from hands-on experience.
