Magic Realism.

Magic Realism when magical elements or illogical scenarios occur in what

otherwise purports to be a realistic narrative. Its normal to find people flying, since it
has always been a human dream.

This effect is especially associated with contemporary Latin American fiction, but it is
also encountered in novels from other continents.

Gabriel Garca Mrquez, Gnter Grass, Salman Rushdie, Milan Kundera, Ben Okri,
Isabel Allende, or Mario Vargas Llosa.

What they had in common is that all these writers have lived through difficult times, and
they feel that they cannot express themselves in simple realism.

In Angela Carters Nights at the Circus, the heroine is a trapeze artist that has wings
that enable her to fly.

In Salman Rushdies The Satanic Verses, the two chieftains fall from an airplane and
by singing a rival song they alighted unharmed on a snow-covered English beach.

In Isabel Allendes La ciudad de las Bestias, the main character goes to the Amazons
to find a mysterious and dangerous beast. There he also finds a new and amazing world.
