Practices I want to Incorporate to Minimize Bias

1. Use direct instruction to teach students what bias is exactly and how it affects others, as
well as themselves.
2. Have students identify one difference they have and share it with the class so we can
appreciate the diversity in our classroom
3. Create a class poster of our handprints to remind them that we are all in one classroom
and all work together towards the success in our education
4. Have students create a visual aid that celebrates their life and their journey thus far
5. Have a class discussion on bias we may have encountered or faced so students are aware
of what it looks like and how to avoid spreading it
6. Include more group-building exercises to promote a bond in our classroom
7. Create a lesson teaching kids how to identify bias and what to say or how to act when it
occurs to distinguish it
8. Create an interactive lesson where students deal with bias and how to face it, and stick up
for others when they see it happening
9. Have students come up with ways that they can help minimize bias outside the
classroom, and inside the classroom
10. Find literature that discusses and shows bias in kid-friendly language. Afterwards have
group and class discussion on what happened in the story, and how the actions affected
the characters.
