Break-out Plan #2
Date: Thursday 22, 2016
Break-out Lesson Title/Topic: Plagiarism and APA
Bridge-in:
What is plagiarism? List scenarios and ask students if they
are examples of plagiarism or not.
How do we ensure we do not plagiarize? In the discipline of
psychology we use APA formatting to ensure we are citing
information properly.
Learning Objective:
For the students to have exposure to what plagiarism is and
how to use APA formatting to ensure they do not plagiarize.
Pre-Assessment:
Have any of you had previous exposure to APA formatting? If
so, what are some of the basic rules of APA formatting? give
time for response
Go over the basic rules for in-text citations and reference
format for journal sources comment that these will be the
most used reference type as a psychology student and
therefore the most important to know.
Participatory Activity:
Allow students to work in groups of two or three to try and
figure out what is wrong in the examples of in-text citations
and references, using the information they were given
previously on how to correctly format in APA style
*ensure each student writes their first and last name on a piece
of paper, and one student from each group hands their groups
paper in to Dr. Jackson. They will be receiving participation
marks for being a part of the break-out today.
Post-Assessment:
Go over the examples and see how the groups did. Briefly
explain what they did get correct and congratulate them on
that, and briefly explain what they got incorrect and why, and
where they can find the information (in the handouts and in
general) to help them with that part in the future.
Summary:
Reinforce that APA formatting is incredibly important for all
psychology students to know, but that its also difficult and
takes a lot of practice to understand and get right. Give
