Srikanth, a talented developer working in his team had sought a two weeks’ vacation as he had not taken any leave in the past nine months. But the project in which they were working was in a crucial stage with a deadline to meet in three months time. The company’s top management had informed Joshu a week after receiving Srikanth’s request that the two weeks leave cannot be granted. But Joshu did not have the heart to tell this immediately to Srikanth. Fortunately, at this juncture, a vacancy for an associate to be posted off shore at the client’s office in USA arose for this project. Off shore postings are generally preferred by all developers as they tend to earn substantially more money, almost double their on shore salary, by such postings. There were two members in Joshu team who could fit the bill and Srikanth was one of them Joshu pushed the case of Srikanth with the top management. It took nearly five weeks to decide on giving the posting to Srikanth. Now that the confirmation of the posting was in his hand, Joshu thought he will call Srikanth and tell him both the news, the vacation leave request being turned down and the offshore posting in USA. 2 87002 When Srikanth walked into the room Joshu began with the bad news. “First Srikanth, Iam sorry to say that due to the project pressure, the management has turned down your request for two weeks vacation. But, let me also tell you.....”. Srikanth, visibly agitated, retorted, “This is awful. T need the vention. More thai me, my family needs it. I have already booked tickets for Singapore and Malaysia. What do I tell my small boy who is now dreaming ‘about this trip? I had made my request eight weeks back. When there was a delay in replying I presumed that it was under consideration. To now say that it ie tuenod down is preposterous. I wonder why I should continue to work for this firm”. Angrily he got up to leave the room. Joshu started saying, “Hang on Srikanth. Don’t jump to conclusions. Wait till ‘you listen to what else I have to say”. Srikanth cut him short saying, “I am not Jaterested in listening to whatever else you wish to say. Enough is enough. Bye” Questions : (@) Should Joshu have informed Srikanth as soon as the management turned down his leave request? (b) Having waited, if Joshu had broken the good news first, would things have come to such a pass? (©) What should Joshu do now? 3 87002
