ABSTRACT
A low cost and a non-contact measurement technique for charactering the mechanical property
data on steel rebar material under the uniaxial load is developed. The technique known as the
Digital Image Correlation (DIC) was used to analyse video images of rebar on estimating the
local strains and elongation along the steel rebar. Initially, the rebar surface specimen was
prepared by special paint to create random speckled patterns. A commercial camera was
installed to record the video of the response of the speckled steel rebar displacement under the
uniaxial load. The videos were digitally analysed by MATLAB to compute the strain and
elongation data on the steel rebar based on an image correlation algorithm. The strains and the
elongation data on the steel rebar can be analysed and compared with the traditional method.
This method has significant impact on reducing the cost of traditional uniaxial testing on rebar,
yet yield accurate results.
