Bank of Greece
1900-1940
In 1922 Greek state had difficulties to find money, so it borrowed them from Greeks with a novel way. Everyone who
had banknotes in drachmas cut them in half. The left half was still in circulation (with half of value of course) and the
right part was changed with 20 years bonds. Later new notes replaced the bisected, having a stamp on them with the
word "NEON" that means new.

1928-1940
When Bank of Greece was founded didn't have its own banknotes. Until these notes circulated Bank of Greece issued
the remaining banknotes of National Bank of Greece overprinted by the new bank's name. Totally ten overprinted
notes were issued. The 25, 50 and 100 drachmas of 1923 and 500 drachmas of 1926 exist also without the overprint.
In 1932 Bank of Greece issued its own first banknotes, 500 and 5000 drachmas. During the 1930's three different
issues circulated. Until 1943 the overprint notes circulated in parallel with the regular notes. The 10 and 20 drachmas
of 1940 are fractional notes printed in Germany.
