LAB 7: LAND USE CHANGE DETECTION

7.0 Introduction:
Land use and land cover is an important component in understanding the interactions of
the human

activities

with

the environment

and thus

it

is

necessary

to

be able to simulate changes. For this lab there were two visualization methods used to look at
land cover change over time. The first was a write function method which highlights change
from two different images. The other was a From-To change method which showed a specific
land cover change from one to the other. Another part of land cover change is to find the percent
in change which was demonstrated with an excel table in the following methods.

7.1 Procedure:
i.

Open image 2005 and 2008 into ERDAS Imagine that already recode

ii.

Determine the percent change in the land use between the two images. Select matrix
union in thematic tools.

iii.

Select input for image recode 2005 and 2008 and save them as output mat0508. Then
open the new image of mat0508

iv.

Change the changes to the new colour of land use categories.

v.

Created an excel document for the new image and multiplied the values by 100 to
determine the percent of change.

7.2 Conclusion:
As conclusion, the changes percentages of each types of land use can be determine with matrix
union methods. From the changes, we can make the analysis of the changes from 2005 and
2008.

7.3 Question:

1.

Calculate urbanization & deforestation happened between that years (2005&2008)

Urbanization increase from 4.60% in 2005 t0 11.11% in 2008
Deforestation is increase from 11.11% in 2005 to 28.92% in 2008

2.

Which land use has highest changes? Present the result using graph + tables.
Highest changes happens toward agriculture features.
