Introduction of Tutee

Jack is a first grade student who comes from a family of six. He has two brothers, one
sister, and Jacks dog is named Dusty. Jack lacked the motivation to improve his literacy
abilities because he did not have the desire or incentive to work hard. He often would
shut down and pull away when challenged with a more difficult assignment. While
discussing Jacks relationship within the classroom, his teacher shared his lack of
motivation, yet also his struggle with sight words. Jacks teacher also explained that if
Jack applied himself in a more academic, intentional way when it came to school, he
would increase in his learning outcomes. The goals that I wanted to focus on was Jacks
knowledge of phonemes and for him to become more motivated in learning while
teaching him essential sight words.
Pre-assessment and Formative Results
#1 Pre-assessment
While I began the pre-assessment, I explained the process to Jack and what my
expectations were for the semester. He mastered the first tutoring assessment,
exemplifying that Jack knew his letters very well. Jack was able to name each letter and
identify the name and sounds of all the letters in the alphabet. Jack also mastered the
concepts about print section and had the knowledge to talk about the title of the book and
expressed his own ideas about what the book was about. However, it was evident that
Jack was not able to read or write sight words efficiently. While I finished the preassessment, I knew that I was going to use strategies to enhance blending of sounds to
create words and sentences, yet also center the instruction on sight words.

#2 Re-assessment/formative (1 and 2 summative report)
As Jack and I continued through the tutoring sessions, I wanted to produce multiple
means of learning new words, yet also enhancing his prior knowledge and making those
skills concrete in his every day learning. I would have Jack write out sight words, spell

each word based on the different phonemes, and make connections between each lesson. I
began focusing on whole words, especially sight words. Using the assessments and
activities with Jack, his confidence grew on the fact that he can succeed in his learning
and how putting in the effort and showing his skill level, he can succeed in school.
Summative Assessment Results
As I began wrapping up each session, Jack and I reflected during our last session on
how each assessment was beneficial and what aspects could be improved. While
assessing Jack and teaching him different strategies and sight words, I have seen a great
improvement in his ability to work. I implemented a discipline plan that enabled him to
work for a prize. Jack is not accustomed to consistency, especially in discipline. However,
he quickly realized that I was firm in my discipline plan and I held myself accountable
for things that I said. After implementing this plan, Jack followed the rules that he and I
created, while he worked for tokens that enabled him to win a prize at the end of the
session.
Final Recommendation for Tutee
While giving these assessments, my love for teaching came through. I realized that if I
could continue to instruct Jack and continue to be with him for the rest of the year, I
would be able to incorporate strategies to increase his word blending and his knowledge
of sight words. I believe that if Jack is able to receive this type of instruction, he will be

able to develop on an appropriate grade level for his age. Being able to give the
assessment, calculate the results, and provide potential solutions to the challenges has
helped me to realize the task that we have as educators: to provide increasingly important
instruction and to meet each student where they are at academically and socially. This
provides a safe environment where each student will have the opportunity to excel and
learn to the best of their ability.
Two Significant Ideas That You Learned In This Experience
While tutoring each week and discussing materials in class, this experience has
enhanced my dedication to teacher and the positive elements that teaching has on
individuals, the teacher and the student. While discussing the readings each week in class,
I have been able to research my own major in a more thoughtful and intentional way.
Along with the importance of gaining more knowledge through researching and
discussing education, I have also had the opportunity to engage, first-hand, on how to
differentiate instruction in order to allow the student to succeed appropriately. This is an
increasingly important component that every educator should be able to integrate into the
classroom. I was able to learn how important it is to be flexible in learning and to taylor
to each individual, students needs.
