Thiscourseisdesignedtoemphasizethestudentsjourneyfromchildhoodtoearlyadolescenceandtohelpthestudents
establishtheiruniqueidentity.Wewillintroduceandstrengthenthestudentsabilitytocriticallyevaluateandanalyzea
varietyofworksandcreateargumentssupportedbystrongtextualevidencefromavarietyofsourcesincludingfictionand
nonfictiontexts.WewillusetheCommonCoreStateStandardstofocusonskillsandstrategiesintheareasofreading,
writing,speakingandlistening.Wewillreadshortstories,poetryandaclassnovel.Studentswillparticipateinnumerous
writingassignmentsincludingcomparativeessays,persuasiveessays,personalnarratives,technicalwriting,biographies,
andblogging.

Allstudentswillberequiredtoreadselfselectedmaterialsfromourclassroomcollectionand/orschoollibrarybasedontheir
STARreadingZoneofProximalDevelopment(ZPD).Studentsareresponsibleforreadingforatleast30minutesper
day,everydayandmaintainareadinglog.
StudentswillparticipateinLitCircles,takeARQuizzes,andcompletereadingandwritingassignmentsbasedonvarious
textscoveredinclass.ReadingGoalswillbetailoredtomeetthevariouslearningneedsofeachstudent,andeachstudentis
expectedtoworktowardsachievingtheirgoalseachquarter.

whatwearedoing,whatwehavedone,andwhatwearegoingtodo.Also,pleasemonitorTeacherEaseandyouremailfor
