Std X students who have sporting achievements to their

Need for Lokpal

Apropos Govt on Mission
Kill Bill (May 31), it is an excellent summary of the governments intent not to enact
the stringent Lokpal Bill to
curb corruption since the
government is run by corrupt
ministers headed by prime
minister Mr Clean. If the government opposes inclusion of
PM, higher judiciary, lower
level bureaucrats and acts of
MPs inside Parliament under
Lokpal ambit, then, what is
purpose of Lokpal Bill? Anna
Hazare and his civil society
members have to be firm and
convince the government to

quota will be extended to

them as well.
Last year, a group of parents of ICSE students had
moved the Bombay high court
against the policy, which benefited only state board students. The high court had
moved in their favour and the
policy was extended to students from other boards too.
However, the policy stated
that the grace marks were applicable only for academic
year 2010-11.
Therefore, the state government is drafting a similar
resolution that will extend the
benefit of grace marks to students from all other boards for
2011-12.
K Parab, under secretary,
state government, said: We
have extended the sports quota and grace marks for all
sports students this year, including senior category and
open category students. We
are now deliberating whether
to continue with these benefits for next academic year
2011-12 as well.

Many top city colleges are urging students to apply online

Hygiene issues
It is surprising that the BMC
has the audacity to state that
they do not need honorary

dents. Online admissions help

students outside the city to apply easily for admission
forms, said Dr Vibhuti Patel,
professor at SNDT university.
Most of the colleges are
also using an online portal
NoPaperForms to set up on-

doctors. The salary of Rs1,000

paid to the honorary doctors
is truly shocking. The BMC
does not seem to care for the
medical fraternity. Moreover,
when one enters BMC hospitals, the dirt and uncleanliness is nauseating. There
seems to be nobody to check
into these aspects. Only during inspections, there is some
semblance of cleanliness. It is
high time the municipal commissioner looks into the
salaries paid to the honorary
doctors as well as the issue of
hygiene in BMC hospitals.

from retail outlets.
Fernandes, however, added
that the no paper initiative
has not been successful yet, as
students take printouts of the

printouts of the online form

college office. Many times,
they end up using more paper

Had Oriental Insurance Company accepted the order of the

state consumer forum on November 6, 2007, it would have
had to pay an amount of Rs27
lakh at an interest of 6% to
Amrit Jawanmal Shah. Now,
nothing has changed except
the rate of interest.
The company moved the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC).
The NCDRC set aside the 2007
order in February 2010 and directed the state forum to decide the complaint afresh allowing the company to file its
defence and surveyors report,
if any, to assess the loss suffered by Shah. However, this
was anything but a development in the companys favour
as the state forum ruled in
Shahs favour again directing
the firm to pay the same
amount at an interest of 9%
per annum from the date of repudiation.

CLAIM GETS

COSTLIER
Presiding member SR
Khanzode and member SP
Lale also ordered Rs25,000 to be
paid as cost of complaint.
Shah had filed a complaint
before the state forum on October 16, 2006, through Consumer Welfare Association, alleging deficiency in service on
account of non-settlement of
his insurance claim.
According to the complaint,
theft of jewellery and cash
from his shop in Zaveri Bazaar
on April 5, 2004, had led to a
loss of Rs27 lakh. Shah informed the insurance company and a police report was
lodged. After survey, the surveyor and investigator appointed by the company expressed their doubt about any
loss to the complainant due to
the alleged theft. The company
in turn lodged a police complaint against Shah under sections 420 and 511 of the Indian
Penal Code for lodging a false
claim in order to defraud them.
However, Shah was eventually acquitted of all charges.
The forum said that the company failed to adhere to NCDRCs directions and neither
did it file its written version on
the record, nor any supplementary survey report to assess Shahs loss. Thus the allegations in the complaint had to
be taken as admitted and needed to be relied and acted upon.
