Find OD of pipe

To date, 24 exploration and profiling wells have been drilled at water depths of between
1,000 and 1,500 metres at Angola Block 15/06. The wells are arranged in clusters and
connected through manifolds, and rigid and flexible lines to the FPSO (Floating Production
Storage and Offloading Unit) NGoma which has a treatment capacity of 40,000 bbl of oil
per day.

Material Grade Selection

Generally carbon steels are used for subsea pipelines. API-5L "Specification for Line Pipe"
(2000) is used for standard specifications. API-5L covers Grade B to Grade X80 steels with
Outside Diameters (OD) ranging from 4.5 to 80 inch. Generally the most common steel
grade used for deep-water subsea pipelines is X65, regarding its cost-effectiveness and
adequate welding technology.

Initial Wall Thickness

Figure: Safety Margin of Wall Thickness Analysis in the Deep Water

From the Figure, the minimum wall thickness of collapse pressure is 18 mm. In this
region, the minimum wall thickness of collapse pressure is greater than the minimum wall
thickness of burst pressure. Therefore, the design of subsea pipeline should be based on the
minimum wall thickness of collapse pressure and the accepted wall thickness of subsea
pipeline should be greater than 18 mm.

By using the software, the 25.8 mm of wall thicknesses obtained is still acceptable for the
deep water condition because the value is still under safety margin of wall thickness.
