Part 1 The surfacing work pieces processing methods

The conventional processing methods of surfacing pieces include: grinding and turning,
some factories choose arc air gouging to machine the work piece.
(1) Process the surfacing work piece with arc air gouging way: is using the carbon rod or
graphite rod as electrode, an arc happened between the workpiece, melting the metal, a
way to process groove on the surface by using the compressed air to blow the molten
metal. Usually used for cleaning the weld root, removing casting flash, burrs, casting
mouth and lack of restrictions. Arc air gouging is just suit for process the surfacing work
piece which has not requirement about the surface precision.
(2) Machine surfacing parts by grinding machine: this method has low efficiency for
machining the surfacing parts, the grinding machine is just used for processing the small
size surfacing parts and getting a good accuracy because the grinding machines machine
range cant hold the large size parts.
(3) Using turning machining to process the surfacing parts: Turning machine the most
common way to process the surfacing parts currently, vibration easily happened during
process as most surfacing parts were rugged, so the tools we chose must have impact
resistance and excellent wear resistance with the tools materials, and only choose the
right tools material to achieving high efficiency, low-cost results.

Part 2 How to choose the tool materials for turning surfacing parts
At present, the common tools materials for processing surfacing include: carbide tools,
coated carbide tools, ceramic cutting tools and cubic boron nitride(CBN) cutting tools.
Following we will analyze those four tools.
(1) Carbide tools to process the surfacing parts: Surfacing parts hardness generally was
HRC40 or more, although carbide has a good impact resistance, while its red hardness is
not very well, the tools will chipping when the wearn tools meet the welded hard
spot, when the hardness of surfacing process layer is less than HRC45, we can choose
carbide tools, such as YS30, YG3X etc., linear velocity with c = 40 m / min.
(2) Coated carbide cutting tools: coating a thin layer metal which was wear resistant and
dysetic on the carbide tools surface. Having a better wear resistant and than processing
efficiency than carbide tools. But because of its own impact resistance did not change,
and the coated layers thickness was just about 8 to 20 microns, so still chipping when
meet the hard spot of the surfacing parts surface, and basically no different performance
with carbide cutting tools, resulting in reduced processing efficiency, and increase the tool
costs.
(3) Ceramic cutting tools: is harder than carbide cutting tools, when the hardness of
surfacing parts more than HRC45, ceramic tools is good; as the ceramic tools poor impact
resistance, often used in finishing, depth of cutting is generally controlled within 0.3mm.
(4) Cubic boron nitride cutting tools: its hardness is higher than the carbide tools and
ceramic tool, referred to as super-hard tools and with diamond cutting tools. Based on

2mm; hardness: HRC60; Tools model: Halnn BN-S20; roughing: linear velocity V = 70m /
min; feed rate:0.7-0.8mm / r; depth of cut ap = 1.7mm; finishing: 120m / min; feed rate
0.25mm / r; tools life: the life of each blade edge :150 minutes; 8 cutting edge; a blade can
use two shafts without change tools.
(2) Processing and repairing of the wear-resistant castings after surfacing (as shown
below): Have no require about the spindle speed of turning machine, there is no
necessary to have a very higher cutting speed for BN-S20 Tool, 45-130m / min is ok;
There is no need to grind the irregular surface during processing or repair welding the
surfacing work piece with high hardness, you can interrupted cutting the surface directly.
And casted iron parts didn't need cooling liquid after turning and repair welding.
Part 4 Summary
Surfacing technology has nearly in China nearly 50 years developing history in China, had
made important contributions for the rise and development of basic industries. It applied
for machinery, energy, transportation, electric power and metallurgy industry and other
fields, but it is still a very difficult task for tools industry which used for processing the
surfacing parts. What can we do to promote the development of worlds machinery
manufacturing industry is research the new tools material with better wear resistance and
impact resistance.
