Period 7 of APUSH is divided into two parts, A


& B. For holiday break you will get ahead in our
reading for Part A. Reading must be accompanied by
two-column notes. You may choose how much to read on each night, but
you must meet the notes submission deadlines.
NOTE: The relevant focus question(s) for each section of text is along the
top of each page.

ASSIGNMENT 2: ELECTION PACKET, PART II


Use your textbook to fill in the chart in the packet on presidential elections from 1852-1944. If necessary you may
use internet sources, be sure to double check they are correct.

ASSIGNMENT 3: RECONSTRUCTION DBQ REWRITES (OPTIONAL)


REWRITING YOUR ESSAY:
In order to receive credit for a rewrite, you must
o Type your essay and send it via email by Thursday 1/5/17 at 11:59 pm
o Make a 10-minute appointment with me to sit down and make your case on how you improved your
essay

First and second person narration
Long direct quotes
PAST tense when writing about history
Origin of source (i.e., avoid, This document says, .)
Specific HIPPO language
o This source shows/tells is not analysis. However, the PURPOSE of this document can be
o Hint hint, this is why we use HIPPO when reading and analyzing the documents (before writing)
o You do NOT need to use all parts of HIPPO for each and every document. The AP rubric only requires
one aspect of HIPPO.
Id strongly suggest using point of view or purpose over (or in addition to) historical context, for
instance
Carry your thesis throughout
o Have specific claims

Racking Up Points on the AP Rubric:


Thesis: answers the question and has distinct claims that address all parts of the question

Argument: Carry your thesis throughout


o Look for and explain how the documents speak to each otherwhether its corroboration or
contradiction

Document Analysis
o Think of the Food Network show Choppedyou need to use as many ingredients from the basket as
possible. Thus, aim to use ALL of your documents
o Beyond just using your documents as evidence, ANALYZE them by using the HIPPO language

Contextualization
o Set the stage of where this historical topic/issue fits into history
What happened before? What happened afterward?
o Needs to be multiple sentences or a full paragraph
o After all, this DBQ is an essay on revolution, which implies change. In order to illustrate and evaluate
change, you need to explain historical conditions before, during, and after Reconstruction.

Evidence Beyond the Documents


o Additional piece of evidence to bring in about the period enough information to act as its own
separate document that stands on its own
o Use your brain dump portion of essay prep
Remember, the brain dump is like the pantry items that allow the basket ingredients in
Chopped to meld together
o Examples: Reconstruction Amendments (13,14, 15), plans for Reconstruction (presidential v. radical)

Synthesis
o Tie this period to a completely different one
Example: what you learned from the documentary 13th about mass incarceration of African
Americans and the inability of felons to vote
o Different from contextualization in that you need to explain a clear connection to a completely different
time period
o Needs to be more than one sentence (preferably a short paragraph)
