SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This fiche collection on the Revolutionary War comprises essential documentsfrom both
American and European writersconcerning the great military and political actions that founded
the United States. Filmed at the Library of Congress, The Revolutionary War: Unit Histories and
Personal Narratives from LexisNexis provides students and researchers with eyewitness
accounts of the American Revolution as well as early, detailed histories of the war and its
ramifications.
Unique Perspectives: American, British, and French Points of View
One of the prominent features of this collection is that it grants access to both American and
British perspectives on the Revolution. And these perspectives are gleaned not only from
historians pens, but also directly from some of the major players in the drama. Researchers
interested in the British side of the issue will appreciate that this collection contains several
documents by John Burgoyne and Henry Clinton, the leaders of the British military expedition.
And those interested in the American side can read documents by Benedict Arnold, Henry Lee,
and John Laurens. In addition, the French perspective is represented by the memoirs of Comte de
Rochambeau (PN182183) and Comte de Deux-Ponts (PN4143).
How This Collection Is Organized
This large collection of well over 150 bookssurely a library in itselfis organized into five
series in order to help researchers quickly focus on and locate relevant material. The series are as
follows: Battles and Campaigns, General Histories, Personal Narratives, Primary Records, and
Unit Histories. Within each series, the documents are arranged alphabetically according to the
authors last name.
Battles and Campaigns
The documents in this series represent early, and in several cases firsthand, accounts of
major battles during the Revolutionary War. Several of these books are significant. General John
Burgoynes work State of the Expedition from Canada (BC6), published in 1780, gives valuable
insight into the British frame of mind during the war. Burgoynes narrative is supplemented by
General Sir Henry Clintons Narrative of the Campaign in 1781 in North America (BC1819).
Researchers will also find memoirs written from the perspective of the average American at the
time, including William Seymours Journal of the Southern Expedition (BC71) and Jonas
Clarks Opening of the War of the Revolution, 19th of April, 1775 (BC17).

General Histories
Within this series are many valuable, early histories of the progress of the American
Revolution. Researchers will benefit from the in-depth nature of these books. Paul Allens
History of the American Revolution, for example, totals over 1,100 pages; the fact that it was
published in 1819 demonstrates that this book can give researchers access to early reflections on
American independence (GH113). Other important books include John Andrewss History of
the War with America, France, Spain, and Holland (1787; GH1418), written from the British
perspective; David Ramsays early work History of the American Revolution (1793; GH5966),
written from the perspective of an American from South Carolina; and Mercy Otis Warrens
significant contribution, History of the Rise, Progress, and Termination of the American
Revolution (1805; GH6883).
Personal Narratives
This series of personal journals, diaries, and memoirs is one of the unique features of this
collection. Contained in this series are firsthand accounts of Revolutionary-era America that give
the kind of details about eighteenth-century life generally unavailable in ordinary history books.
Ebenezer Smith Thomass book, Reminiscences of the Last Sixty-five Years, Commencing with
the Battle of Lexington (1840), for example, contains a fascinating account of the early years of
Cincinnati, Ohio, as well as an interesting account of his visit to Paris, France (PN196203).
George A. Ward, in his preface to the Journal and Letters of Samuel Curwen, an American in
England, from 17751783, quotes extensively from Charles Dickenss glowing June 1853
review of this book by Curwen, demonstrating the importanceand high qualityof the work
(PN208). Also of interest to researchers will be Abraham Tomlinsons Military Journals of Two
Private Soldiers, 17581775, which gives a complete listing of those Americans killed and
wounded at the battles of Lexington and Concord (PN205).
Primary Records
The highlight of this series is Benedict Arnolds Regimental Memorandum Book written
while at Ticonderoga and Crown Point (PR1). In addition to having a very helpful introductory
essay, this small but significant document contains Arnolds personal notes from May 10 to June
24, 1775. Other important volumes in which researchers may be interested include the Logs of
the SerapisAllianceAriel, under the Command of John Paul Jones, 17791780 (PR56); the
Orderly Book of General George Washington (PR13); General Sir William Howes Orderly
Book (PR2730); and General Orders Issued by Major-General Israel Putnam (PR1416).
Unit Histories
Researchers interested in military history will appreciate the documents in this series, each of
which covers a particular military unit or regiment. Collected here are descriptions of both
American and British military units, including specialized studies like Frederic Kidders History
of the First New Hampshire Regiment in the War of the Revolution (UH6971) and Edward
Huttons Brief History of the Kings Royal Rifle Corps (UH6566). The volumes dealing with
British regiments often give an extensive history covering many years, of which that regiments
time in the American Revolution is but a part. The books dealing with American regiments are
also worthy of note. One highlight is Willis John Abbots Blue Jackets of 76, which recounts the
famous battle between John Paul Joness Bon Homme Richard and the British ship Serapis.

vi

Conclusion
The Revolutionary War: Unit Histories and Personal Narratives is an important collection of
rare books that deserves a place in any library or place of research. Encompassed within its
bounds are important primary sources from eyewitnesses and early historians that provide for a
comprehensive understanding of the background and progress of the American Revolution.
In addition, researchers may also be interested in the following titles from LexisNexis: The
American Revolution; Colonial Office Records: Class 5 Files; Jeffersonian America; Journal of
the U.S. Continental Congress; and The War of 1812: Battle and Campaigns, Personal
Narratives and Unit Histories.

his fiche collection on the Revolutionary War comprises essential

documentsfrom both American and European writers
concerning the great military and political actions that founded the
United States. Filmed at the Library of Congress, The Revolutionary War:
Unit Histories and Personal Narratives from LexisNexis provides students
and researchers with eye-witness accounts of the American Revolution as
well as early, detailed histories of the war and its ramifications.
Unique Perspectives: American, British, and French Points of View
One of the prominent features of this collection is that it grants access to
both American and British perspectives on the Revolution. And these
perspectives are gleaned not only from historians pens, but also directly
from some of the major players in the drama. Researchers interested in the
British side of the issue will appreciate that this collection contains several
documents by John Burgoyne and Henry Clinton, the leaders of the British
military expedition. And those interested in the American side can read
documents by Benedict Arnold, Henry Lee, and John Laurens. In addition,
the French perspective is represented by the memoirs of Comte de
Rochambeau and Comte de Deux-Ponts.
How This Collection Is Organized
This large collection of well over 150 bookssurely a library in itself
is helpfully organized into five series in order to help researchers quickly
focus on and locate relevant material. The series are as follows: Battles and
Campaigns, General Histories, Personal Narratives, Primary Records, and
Unit Histories. Within each series, the documents are arranged
alphabetically according to the authors last name.
The Revolutionary War: Unit Histories and Personal Narratives is an
important collection of rare books that deserves a place in any library or
place of research. Encompassed within its bounds are important primary
sources from eye-witnesses and early historians that provide for a
comprehensive understanding of the background and progress of the
American Revolution.
