DEATH PENALTY
Death penalty in a pre-dominantly Catholic society will always be a very
controversial issue. Many people cannot accept that the state can end the
life of a criminal rather than reform him.
"We don't need harsher penalties. What we need is judicial certainty where
those responsible are held accountable, a system of justice that is swift,
honest and equal," ayon kay Quimbo, chairman ng House ways and means
committee.
"It (death penalty) will not deter crime. What is needed is to strengthen our
law enforcement, prosecution and judicial systems in order to bring criminals
to justice and be meted with appropriate penalties such as life imprisonment

Hindi natin masasabing mapapababa ng death penalty ang antas ng
krimen. Wala pang pagsasaliksik na nakapagpatunay rito. Karapatan ng
bawat isa saatin na mabuhay. Hindi rason ang an eye for an eye, a tooth for
a tooth sa kasong ito. Ang death penalty ay ang siyang sumisira sa
prinsipyo niya. Ang prinsipyo nito ay ang pagkitil ng buhay ng kriminal
kapalit ng buhay na sinira o kinitil niya ng dahil sa paggawa ng isang
kagimbal-gimbal na krimen. Pero kung ang isang taong may sinira o
kinuhang buhay ay papatayin ng mga doktor gamit ang lethal injection, hindi
ba dapat patayin rin ang mga doctor dahil may kinuha silang buhay? Lahat
naman tayo ay pantay-pantay. Kahit isang kriminal pa yan, o isang
inosenteng tao, pareho lang ang kahalagahan ng buhay nila. Hindi pa ba
sapat na kamalian ang may isang namatay at kailangan pang pumatay ng
