CHURCH SERVICES General Editor David Willcocks SATB and organ The Lamentation Edward C. Bairstow MUSIC DEPARTMENT OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS OXFORD DIRECTIONS FOR CHANTING ‘The Lamentation should be chanted quite slowly, but in speech rhythm. The syllables «pportioned to the bars following the reciting bars must not be sung slower than the recitation. ‘A line over a syllable indicates that two notes are sung tot, Dots over syllables indicate thet two syllables are sung to one note. ‘The figure 3 placed over the final syllable of reciting bar means that the chord in that bar is re- peated as the first chord of a triplet which includes the two minims in the following bar, as shown in the music to verses 6 and 7. ‘The dagger sign (}) is placed before verses where the chant is divided into 4 bars plus 3, instead of 3 bars plus 4. No pause should be made at bar 3. The Lamentation . For use as an alternative to the Benedicite in Lent, or on any other suitable occasion ‘Words selected from the Lamentations of Jeremiaby ‘The Very Rev. E.M. Milner-White, Dean of York EDWARD C.
