1. Determine the velocity of an electron driven by an electric field E = E0 eit

in the presence of a constant, unifrom magnetic field B0 . Choose the Z- axis
along the B0 , but do not make any assumptions about the direction of E0 . if
there are n electrons per unit volume,write the current in the form ji = ij Ej .
2. (a) Starting with the expression ~v =
~ ~r for a particle in circular motion,
derive the expression for inertia tensor.
(b) Compute the inertia tensor for a uniform cylinder R and height h. Hence
find its angular momentum when it rotates with angular speed about
an axis through its center and along its length.
3. (a) Verify that the quantities

xx
x22
aij = 1 2 2
x2 x1 x2

are components of a second order plane tensor.

(b) Show that the quantities

x x x22
bij = 1 2 2
x2 x1 x2

are not components of a tensor.

4. The stress tensor at a point P is given by

2 1 1
Sij = 1 2 1
1 1 2
What is the stress vector on a surface normal to the unit vector n = 23 e1 +

a surface ?

5. Consider a stress tensor given by

0 1 1
Sij = 1 2 1

If we change the coordinate system through the transformation x0i = ij xj
where

Then using the transformation law show
stress tensor become
