Memory is the best essential element of a computer because computer cant perform simple tasks.
The performance of computer mainly based on memory and CPU. Memory is internal storage
media of computer that has several names such as majorly categorized into two types, Main
memory and Secondary memory.
Types of Computer Memory
1. Primary Memory (Main Memory) / Volatile Memory.
2. Secondary Memory / Non Volatile Memory.
3. Cache Memory
3 Cache Memory
Cache memory is a very high speed semiconductor memory which can speed up CPU. It acts as a
buffer between the CPU and main memory. It is used to hold those parts of data and program which
are most frequently used by CPU. The parts of data and programs are transferred from disk to cache
memory by operating system, from where CPU can access them.
Cache memory is an extremely fast memory type that acts as a buffer between RAM and the CPU.
It holds frequently requested data and instructions so that they are immediately available to the CPU
when needed.
Cache memory is located in two general locations: inside the processor (internal cache) and on the
motherboard (external cache):
Internal cache: also known as primary cache, internal cache is located inside the CPU chip.
External cache: also known as secondary cache, external cache is located on the motherboard
outside the CPU. This is the cache referred to on PC specifications.
Advantages
The advantages of cache memory are as follows:
Cache memory is faster than main memory.
It consumes less access time as compared to main memory.
It stores the program that can be executed within a short period of time.
It stores data for temporary use.
Disadvantages
The disadvantages of cache memory are as follows:
Cache memory has limited capacity.
It is very expensive.
Ram types
Dynamic RAM (DRAM) DRAM is a classic form of RAM and has since been replaced by the
faster and less expensive SDRAM. DRAM stores data electrically in a storage cell and refreshes the
storage cell every few milliseconds.
Extended Data-Out RAM (EDO RAM) EDO RAM is faster than DRAM. EDO RAM has also
been replaced by SDRAM. EDO RAM is an improvement on DRAM because it has advanced
timing features. EDO extends the amount of time data is stored and has a reduced refresh rate. This
alleviates the CPU and RAM from timing constraints and improves performance.
Synchronous DRAM (SDRAM) SDRAM replaced DRAM, FPM, and EDO. SDRAM is an
improvement because it synchronizes data transfer between the CPU and memory. SDRAM allows
the CPU to process data while another process is being queued. Figure shows an SDRAM.
