PhD Studentship

Intuitive and intelligent control of space mechatronic

technology
University of Strathclyde Faculty of
Engineering
This is a call for applications for a funded PhD studentship at the Faculty of
Engineering, University of Strathclyde, in Intuitive and intelligent control of space
mechatronic technology. The PhD project aim is to investigate the current design
methodologies for mechatronic systems and develop and apply these
methodologies in the design of a new space serve robotic system that will
demonstrate the applicability of a new methodology for a satellite refuelling system.
Space robotic systems will become a new technology for future space missions and
sustainable use of space by providing much required service and maintenance to
the existing space system, which were expensive to build and launch. The PhD
student will investigate a novel design methodology and actual design of a space
robotic system for general purpose larger space system service and maintenance.
The novelty of this project will be the development of potentially world first space
robotic system which can be used to refuel satellites.
The student should have a first or second class Honours degree (minimum 2.1) in
engineering, Technology, business or a similar discipline.
Due to closer involvement of this project with industrial partners from China and the
UK (Oxford Technologies Ltd), the candidate will be exposed to work with
international industrial partners in a collaborative and distributed environment.
The 3.5 year studentship will cover student fees (up to the value of home fees) and
give a tax free stipend of 14,200 per annum, and this is available to candidates of
all nationalities.
To apply for the studentship, candidates should complete an online application on
the University website http://www.strath.ac.uk/prospectus/postgraduateapplications/

naming Intuitive and intelligent control of space mechatronic technology as the

research area.
