CHEM3B Chapter 2 Worksheet - Alkenes and Alkynes Name_______________________

Rules for naming alkenes and alkynes

1) Name the parent hydrocarbon
Find the longest chain containing the double or triple bond
2) Number the carbon atoms in the chain
begin at the end nearer the double bond or triple bond
If the double (or triple) bond is equidistant from the two ends, begin at the end nearest the
first branch point
3) Write the full name
number substituents according to their positions in the chain (list them alphabetically
when naming)
indicate the position of the double (or triple) bond by giving the number of the first
alkene carbon and placing that number immediately before the parent name
4) Use suffixes -di, tri, tetra for 2 or more double or triple bonds
5) Cycloalkenes: the double bond is between carbon 1 and carbon 2.
the first substituent has the lowest number possible
6) If the parent hydrocarbon contains both a double and a triple bond, name it as an alka-en-yne
and indicate the position of the double and triple bond just before the "en" and "yne" part of
the name.

a)

b)

octa-2-en-4-yne

octa-2-ene-6-yne

not octa-6-ene-

2-yne
Number the parent hydrocarbon giving either the double or triple bond the lowest
number, but if the double bond and triple bond are both equal distances from the end of
the hydrocarbon, give the double bond the lowest number (as ene comes alphabetically
before yne)
