Depression and Suicide in Teens

Kevin Sabeti
Depression among teens is a very serious and important issue that harms many young peoples
mental health and happiness. More than just a simple sadness that can be controlled with
strength or willpower, depression can sometimes lead to dangerous or life-threatening results. In
2015 alone, nearly three million American teenagers had at least one severe depressive
episode, representing about 12.5% of the teenage population (National Institute of Mental
Health). Depression can lead to a variety of emotional changes that are prevalent among
teenagers including low self-esteem, hopelessness, or harsh criticisms of self. Along with school
and a range of other stresses present in a teens life, depression can also negatively impact
peoples behavior with tiredness, isolation, or troubles with appearance and body image (Mayo
Clinic). Understanding and being aware of depression is important to maintaining mental health
and understanding possible treatments or ways to seek help if a teenager is suffering.
