officer,NarendraKumar.ThedeathhasoutragedIndiabecauseMrKumarwasapparentlykilledfortryingtocombatillegalminingin
thestate.TheIPSisnotalawenforcementagencyitisacivilservicewhichselectsofficersviacompetitiveexams.Herearetenbig
factsonthiscase:
1)IPSofficerNarendraKumarwaskilledonThursdaywhenamandrivingatractorranoverhim.MrKumarhadtriedtostopthe
tractor,whichwasloadedwithillegallyminedstonesintheMorenadistrict.MrKumarspottedthetractorwhilehewasoutpatrolling.
Whenthedriverrefusedtostop,MrKumargotoutofhisjeepandblockedthetractor'spath.Thedriverploughedintohim.Morena
districtisrichinstonesmeantforconstructionandthesandhereisoneofthefinestinthecountry.

2)Thetractordriver,identifiedasManojGurjarbythelocalpolice,hasbeenarrested.Aninquiryhasbeenorderedbythe
governmenttodeterminehisallegedlinkstothestate'snotoriousandexpansiveminingmafia.Thelocalpolicedeniesthathewas
partofalargerconspiracytoassassinateMrKumar,asallegedbyhisfamily.

3)MrKumarwaspostedatBanmoreasaSubDivisionalOfficerofPolice(SDOP)amonthagoandhadtakenontheminingmafia
bycancellingseverallicensesandseizinganumberoftrucksandtractorsengagedinillegalquarrying.

4)MrKumarwas30.Hiswife,anIASofficernamedMadhuraniTewatia,isexpectingtheirfirstchild.

5)Oneoftheseniorpolicemenhandlingthecase,DPGupta,saidthatgoingbyeyewitnessaccountsandevidencesavailablesofar,
itappearsthatthedriverhadnolinkswiththeminingmafia.
6)InspectorGeneralofPoliceSWNaqvisaidthatthoughhewasknownlocallyforhisattemptstocurbtheminingmafia,MrKumar
hadneverreportedanykindofthreattohislife.

7)Hisfather,KeshavDev,describesMrKumar'skillingasawellplannedconspiracy."Hedidnotreceivecooperationofthelocal
police.Hestoppedvehiclescarryingstonestocheckthen.IsthistheworkoftheIPSofficer,ortheworkofathanalevelpoliceman?"

8)MrKumarwascrematedwithfullstatehonoursinhisvillagenearMathuratoday.Manypeoplewholiveinandaroundhisvillage
showeduptosupporthisfamily.
9)NarendraSinghTomar,thelocalMP,whoisfromtherulingBJP,hasrefutedallegationsbytheoppositionthatseveralBJP
leadersplaybackstagerolesinthestate'sillegalmining.

10)MrKumar'sfoursisterssayanhonestmanhasbeenkilledforhisattempttofightcorruption.Theyrememberhimasthebright
youngboywhourgedhisfamilywhenhewasjustfiveyearsoldtotransferhimfromhisvillageschooltooneinthenearbytownof
Mathurasothathecouldgetabettereducation.
