Thermodynamics: Questions for Examples Class 2
These questions all come from past first year examination papers. Questions (a), (b)
and (c) come from the 2016 September examination. Question (d) comes from the
2015 September examination.

(a) A four-stroke engine rotates at 6,000 r.p.m. and produces 60 kW of shaft power.
It is 25% efficient. How much heat is rejected per cycle?
(4 marks)

(b) Steam enters an adiabatic nozzle at a speed of 30 ms-1, a temperature of 500

C, and a pressure of 10 bar absolute. It exits at 300 C at 2 bar absolute.
(i) What is the exit speed?

(4 marks)

(ii) Show that the process is irreversible.

(2 marks)

(c) An industrial refrigeration plant uses ammonia (Refrigerant 717) as a

refrigerant. The evaporator takes in 2 kg s-1 saturated liquid at -20C. The gas
leaving the evaporator is at -7C at the same pressure.
(i)

What is the pressure in the evaporator?

(2 marks)

(ii)

What is the cooling power?

(d) A cyclic Carnot refrigerator with a coefficient of performance of 3 takes heat

from a large body at 240 K and delivers it to the environment at 320 K.
(i)

What is the cooling power for each kJ of work consumed per second?
(1 mark)

(ii)

For each kJ of work consumed, calculate the entropy change of the

cold body and the heat rejected.
(2 marks)

(iii)

For each kJ of work consumed, calculate the entropy change of the

environment. Compare your answer to that from part (ii) and give a
brief explanation for any difference or similarity.
