Cable Spool Transportation

2004 Ideation International Inc.

10

Cable Spool Transportation

Transportation of heavy cable spools could be dangerous they can get

loose as a result of shocks, abrupt accelerations or braking and roll down.
How to prevent it?

2004 Ideation International Inc.

11

Cable Spool Transportation

The obvious solution is to place the spool on its flat side. However, it is forbidden
to do because cable can be damaged.

Another solution is making spools not round. Unfortunately,

it is not acceptable; it has to be round for convenient
utilization.
Typical contradiction the spool has to be round for
convenient utilization and has to be not round to
prevent rolling down during transportation.
2004 Ideation International Inc.

12

Cable Spool Transportation

Simple but costly solution is to resolve the
contradiction in time place spools in special wooden
cases during transportation. However, these cases are
heavy and expensive.

Strut Simplification Attempts

The strut problem existed for over 40 years (from the
company inception). Dozens of attempts to solve it were
made as follows:
Changing material and dimensions
Increasing the number of struts
Creating a small tube on the end of the strut and
making a thread
Making the strut from a cylinder rod woth the thread
at the end and flattening the middle part
Other ways to link the pump sections
Linking struts with the pump heads without thread
All attempts have failed for various reasons, such as
deterioration in reliability, unacceptable increase in
production cost. A limited success was achieved with
some improvement in the welding process, however not
sufficiently.

42

Valve Travel Stop

Ideal Model

Useful Function of the valve

travel stop can be provided by
3 dots:
Allows water to pass through
Prevents ball from flowing with
water

Problem:
What is the simplest way to
connect the 3 dots?

44

Valve Travel Stop

New Design
Useful Function of valve travel stop:
Allows water to pass through
Prevents ball from flowing with water
Positions in correct location

Benefit:
Stronger resistance against impact of ball
allows decreased thickness of travel stop
by a factor of two

Harmful Function of valve travel stop:

Sharp edge of travel stop can damage ball

Secondary problem: Prevent the sharp edge of the travel

stop from damaging the ball
2004 Ideation International Inc.

45

Valve Travel Stop

Secondary problem
Prevent sharp edge of travel stop from damaging ball
Ideal: Sharp edge of travel stop cant
damage ball

Contradiction: Travel stop should

contact the ball to prevent it from flowing
with the water . . .
but it should NOT contact the ball so that
the sharp edge doesnt damage the ball

Resolution of contradiction: The

contradiction can be resolved using
separation in space through the use of
space resources the ball should contact
the side of triangle but should not contact
the corners. This is possible if the sides are
bent.
2004 Ideation International Inc.

46

Valve Travel Stop

Design with Bent Strips
A-A

Additional idea:
Bending sides of triangle in the
stamping process

Benefit:
Sharp edge of travel stop cant
contact the ball
Increased resistance against
impact of ball because shape
of travel stop becomes more
rigid
Decreased hydraulic
resistance of water flow

Secondary problem: How to economize on labor and material?

2004 Ideation International Inc.

47

Valve Travel Stop

Stamping Schematic
Travel stops for smaller pumps

Metal strip

Additional ideas:
Stamping travel stops from metal strip to optimize metal utilization
Simultaneous stamping of travel stops for different sizes of pumps

Benefit: Material and labor economy

2004 Ideation International Inc.

48

Valve Travel Stop Smallest Size

Secondary problem:
For the smallest travel stop, manufacturing tests showed
it was impossible to bend the sides without causing metal
damage in the corners
Ideal: Bending without damage
Contradiction: Sides of travel stop
should be bent to provide protection of the
ball . . . but should NOT be bent in order to
prevent metal damage

Resolution of contradiction: This

contradiction can be resolved in space by
using space resources it is possible to add
a supplementary material to the travel stop,
and then bend this material.

specialists and three technicians have been working with a
Centrifugal Well Pump. The work included:
Directed Evolution of pumps resulting in obtaining a
set of promising directions in building the next
generation of pumps.
Anticipatory Failure Determination (AFD) for the
pumps that allowed to unveil over 20 reasons for
deterioration of reliability and durability of pumps.
TRIZ based Cost Reduction (Idealization)
Over 200 of various technological problems related to
design and manufacturing process have been addressed
resulting in significant quality improvement and production
cost reduction.

is still rather expensive ($5 per bumper) and not very
effective as it becomes rusting anyway with the time.

Results of Analysis of Problem Statements

for Bumper Back Side Corrosion Problem
1.

Changing understanding of the problem: Rust is not dangerous, people do

not like see rust on a new truck (they do not complain about rust on the
bottom as they do not see it).

2.

Changing the direction of work: Instead of trying to eliminate rust,

eliminate the possibility to see it.

3.

Changing the work content: Elimination of rust or of the possibility to see

it in a narrow zone from each side of the bumper.
Zone in which rust
is visible in field

Results of Analysis of Problem Statements

Idea 1: Plastic strips, covering gap between the bumper and truck body
Sequential problem: One cannot change already approved design of the
bumper and the truck styling.
Idea 2: Applying wax only to zones that are visible.
Sequential problem: Idea 2 allows reducing cost, however, it is pretty small
reduction and wax is still not durable.
Idea 3: Using more effective solvent based coating
Sequential problem: Problem with environment protection and trade union
