Assignment/Activity Title— Booker T. Washington-W.E.B. Dubois Essay Year—2016
Skill— Evaluating/Interpreting Portfolio Competency—Critical Thinking
'n my freshman year, | had to write an essay evaluating the merits and the shortcomings of
Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Dubois’ views regarding the improvement of race relations in the
United States. Dubois’ main argument was that the improvement of race relations should be
concentrated on the improvement of civil rights, whereas Booker T. Washington felt that the
primary focus should be on the improvement of economic equality throughout the races.
Going into this project, | immediately decided that | agreed with W.E.B. Dubois in that the
Primary cause for the perpetuation of racism and discrimination was a general lack of political
rights. However, throughout researching, my views swayed towards agreeing with Booker T.
Washington upon coming to the realization that there is factual evidence suggesting that while
Political equality is growing for African Americans, economic prosperity is declining. I realized that
my opinions had more or less validity in the absence of facts. A major discovery that I took out of
this project was the realization that opinions are about how you analyze the facts presented to you
- rather than what you perceive the facts to be.
‘As a result of this assignment, | feel as though I look at primary sources with a higher sense
of respect and understanding. | learned that primary sources are a very necessary component in
any claim/written piece, and | feel as though this knowledge will definitely help guide me later on
in future writing assignments.

town. Dubois
‘went to Harvard, and throughout his
lifetime studied polities and social sciences. Dubois felt as
though the leading solution to issues regarding race relations between A‘fican Americans and
whites was civil sights. In respons tothe ethics of Booker Washington, Dubois insisted that “it
is utterly impossibl...for working men and property owners to defend ther rights and exist
without the right of suffage.° He lists the right to vote, civic equality and the education of youth
according o ability oe the three things that must be asked of our goverment in order to even
begin to be complaint. He suggests that economic success, eannot come before civil rights
because ‘reletless color prejudice is moe often a cause than a result ofthe Negro's
degradation This concept is extremely solid He implies that economic status i a result of social
‘equality and status, therefore in order to improve economic status, our country must frst improve
