    Assignment/Activity Title— Booker T. Washington-W.E.B. Dubois Essay Year—2016 Skill— Evaluating/Interpreting Portfolio Competency—Critical Thinking 'n my freshman year, | had to write an essay evaluating the merits and the shortcomings of Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Dubois’ views regarding the improvement of race relations in the United States. Dubois’ main argument was that the improvement of race relations should be concentrated on the improvement of civil rights, whereas Booker T. Washington felt that the primary focus should be on the improvement of economic equality throughout the races. Going into this project, | immediately decided that | agreed with W.E.B. Dubois in that the Primary cause for the perpetuation of racism and discrimination was a general lack of political rights. However, throughout researching, my views swayed towards agreeing with Booker T. Washington upon coming to the realization that there is factual evidence suggesting that while Political equality is growing for African Americans, economic prosperity is declining. I realized that my opinions had more or less validity in the absence of facts.
