What is Police brutality?

-Police brutality: the intentional use of

excessive force by a police officer .This may
include physical abuse, verbal attacks, and
psychological intimidation.
-Police brutality can be associated with racial
profiling.
- Also differences in religion, and politics also
sometimes exist between citizens and police
officers.
-Police brutality is wrong and must come to a
stop.

The history of Police brutality

-The first case of police brutality was in chicago of 1872. The chicago police department was accused
of beating a civilian under arrest at the police station.
-Many examples of police brutality took place during the civil rights movement of the 1960`s. One
example took place march 7, 1964, when alabama police attacked the selma-to-montgomery marchers
on a day known as bloody sunday. During the vietnam war anti-war demonstrations were broken up
through billy clubs and tear gas. The most notable was at the 1968 national democratic convention in
chicago.

Cases of police brutality

-Rodney king beating: in los angeles of 1991, a taxi driver, Rodney king was pulled over, and beaten by
five LAPD officers, these officers were later acquitted. This resulted in the LA riots, which resulted in 53
deaths, 2,303 injuries, 7,000+ fires, and nearly $1 billion in financial losses.
- in new york city of 1999, Amadou Diallo was shot outside of his apartment by plain clothed officers,
because they mistook his wallet for a gun. Both of the officers were acquitted.

Cases of police brutality (continued)

-On september 4, 2014, lavar jones was stopped by a south carolina state trooper for a seatbelt
violation. Jones was shot multiple times, but survived. In this case the officer was charged with assault
and battery.
-On september 20, 2016 43 year old keith lamont scott was shot and killed in Charlotte, NC. the
shooting later resulted in riots.

Who has taken a stand?

Some NBA players took part of the we can`t breath movement by wearing t-shirts that read I can't
breath, after the death of Eric Garner, who was choked to death by a NYPD officer. These players
included Lebron James, Kyrie Irving, Kobe Bryant and among some others. Also groups such Black
Lives Matter have also taken a stand police brutality, especially towards the black community. These
movements soon formed after the killings of unarmed african americans by police officers.

How can we put a stop to police brutality?

I believe the country must come together as a whole and see the problem. The communities that have
been affected by cases of police beatings and /or shootings, and the ones that have not been affected
by those events should come together with their police departments and have an understanding with
each other. This problem has been going on for far too long and it must come to a stop.

conclusion

Police brutality has been taking place for decades now. You see it everyday on the news. Its come to
the point where when you see it, it's like whatever. We must bring this to a stop and we are the only
ones that can do it. No one is going to do it for us.
