P
oppys new album Starz` has
had us all reminiscing for the
festival season. Shorts, shades
and the deformed attempt of
indie kids trying to dance; nevertheless a month of great music. The kind
of album that is a perfect mix of rock
and psychedelia, Poppy puts her own
spin on alternative. After its release
on May 12th 2017, her hit song Iris
has had over 1mil Spotify downloads,
as well as being N.O1 in the ITunes
charts.

I sing because it lets me express myself in a way that can be heard. I never
imagined for my music to get this
much support, Poppy explains as we
ask her thoughts on her success.
Q: How long have you been writing
music and how has your music style
developed?
A: Ever since I got a toy mic. for my
third birthday I have loved to sing. I
was 16 when I realised that I have a
true passion for making music. I entered a school talent show and played
an acoustic twist of There is a light
from The Smiths. I incorporated
my own lyrics, and after winning was
inspired to write for real. After producing songs within a confined genre
with my guitar, I decided to experiment with different styles. I guess it
was my experience at my first Indie
festival that really changed things for
me.

I remember seeing Pink Floyd and

thinking wow theyre cool, and thats
what I want to do. My further inspirations later came from Lorde, and I
also found myself looking at alternative fashion. Ive been to NYFW and
since, been fascinated by how clothes
can change perceptions of people.
Thats one of the topics that I gesture
within my music.
Q: What are your plans for the
future?
A: I want to keep making music for
as long as possible. To me its not
about success but the enjoyment
of doing something that I love and
being able to share it with others. I
am in the process of moving into an
apartment in London with my fianc
and our overly spoilt Labrador Tilly.
Im always making music and am
excited to share more in the future.
Since the release of Starz, Poppy
has blown up globally, and is getting
ready for her tour where she will visit
England, France, Germany, Ireland,
Italy, Switzerland, and later America. Tour dates and tickets have been

enjoyable; a reminder to not give a
damn.
As well as writing her own songs and
using her guitar to incorporate her
own instrumental, Poppy uses electronic sounds to generate psychedelic beats to give the backing a better
beat. I like to focus on keyboard, as
well as drums to support my music.
I like how the two sound together
and find they work well at different
tempos.
Unlike a significant amount of singer-songwriters, Poppy takes pride
in the creation of her songs, making
sure that she is a part of the whole
process. I think it is important to
make most decisions yourself. Its
your song after all, so its important
to put the correct meaning across,
the 22yr old states.

artist Lana del Rey, so we
asked Poppy for more info:

I cannot confirm this, however can

say that Lana has been a role model
and inspiration ever since I heard her
album Honeymoon. I love the purity
of her voice and cannot deny that it
would be an honour to work with
her. Well just have to see how things
go I guess
She sure knows how to hold us in
suspense! We wish you and your

ocean, makes me smile, dum da da
