ECE 101 Problem Set #6 Solution (Fall 2014)

Problem 1.
(a). As instructed, we will use

= 35 rad/s. This results in shifted copies of X(j) spaced 35 rad/s

apart, as shown below, for = [-35,35], with amplitude scale factor 1/T where T = 2/35.

We can see that to recover the original signal (the blue signal in the above sketch) we should use a
lowpass filter with

between 15 and 20 rad/s, as shown below, with a gain factor T for the

lowpass region.

(b.) As instructed, we will try

= 10 rad/s. This results in shifted copies of X(j) spaced 10

rad/s apart, as shown below, for = [-25,25], with amplitude scale factor 1/T where T = /5.

Evidently, the student is correct -- A sampling rate of 10 rad/s is sufficient. To recover the original
signal (the blue signal in the above sketch) we should use a filter with the frequency response
shown below, with a gain factor T for the passband.

(c.) In this case, again using a sampling rate of 10 rad/s, we get

(j) as shown below for

= [-25,25], with amplitude scale factor 1/T where T = /5.

Evidently, this sampling rate will not work, because we get aliasing effects. We therefore cannot
reconstruct y(t) from

(t).

(d.) Based on his flawed logical reasoning, perhaps the student SHOULD switch majors, but I
wouldn't recommend he switch into engineering.
