William Shakespeare
William Shakespeare was an English author who wrote 38 plays, 154
sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses. He is considered
to be the greatest writer in the English language, his most famous plays
being Romeo and Juliet, Othello and Macbeth.
Shakespeare was born and brought up in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. At
the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway with whom he had three children,
Susanna, Hamnet and Judith. By 1592 he had become an actor and was
becoming well known as a writer of plays. At the time of his death in 1616,
only some of his plays had been published. His plays were collected and
published six years after he died. Despite getting recognition after his death,
there is proof that people in his time thought greatly of him. After his death,
even his rival Ben Jonson said paid him homage.
What makes Shakespeare so important is the fact that he passed the test of
time, his plays being relevant even now, 500 years later. That is because his
plays are universal, the issues and situations in the plays relating to many
issues and problems faced today. In fact, I believe they apply to about any
time, because they are connected with the human nature and peoples way
of thinking. One hundred years from now, the plays will relate to the
concerns of that time. Also, the speech within the plays is so expressive,
original and creative, that it has left an impact on the English language itself.
In all of his work, the plays, the sonnets and the narrative poems,
Shakespeare uses over 17 thousand words. Of those words, he invented
about 1,700 of them.
In the 21st century, his work has been constantly adopted and rediscovered
by new movements in scholarship and performance. His plays remain highly
popular today and are constantly studied, performed, and interpreted in
diverse cultures around the world.
