Castro Church Colo Church

This church which is located in the Castro’s square
is the urban centre from where the evangelization
was first conducted among the natives’
communities by Franciscans and Jesuits priests on
the Archipelago of Chiloe. The older temple was
destroyed by a fire in 1902 but it was reconstructed
in 1912. This temple possesses some differences
and some similarities to the tradition of this place
(Chiloe). Its design belongs to the Italian architect
Eduardo Provasoli and it is based on a mixture of
Neo-Gothic and Classic styles together with the
local constructive tradition.

The church of Colo was built around 1890. It is
located in Isla Grande of Chiloe and its patron saint
is San Antonio whose festivity is on June 13th.
Though there are no records, it is believed that
since its construction this church has suffered some
important modifications. Its principal façade is
highlighted by the portico that ends in a half arch
toward the two endings, which gives it a special
aspect that differs from the typology of the
churches in Chiloé. This characteristic is present
only in Colo and Quicaví churches.
