Track 4: Listening Test for Unit 2

Becky: I was an au pair for a family for six weeks when I was nineteen. It was awful, partly because
of the family I was with, and partly because nineteen is a difficult age to leave home and fly thousands
of miles away to a foreign country to live with complete strangers. And although we spoke the same
language, I just wasnt prepared for the culture shock. Its just a really different country to England.
The parents were both busy at work, running their own company. They lived in a huge house and were
fabulously wealthy, but they were too busy to bother welcoming me into their home. They both
absolutely doted on their dog, but they just werent interested in their children. In fact, they totally
ignored them most of the time. As the au pair, I was expected to be babysitter, cook, servant and mum.
I had to do housework and baby-sit most nights. They even made me and the children eat in the
kitchen while they ate in the dining room. But actually, I didnt mind eating with the children, as they
were more fun!
Before the trip, I had been looking forward to being away from home, but I was used to living in a city
and having a lot of independence, and life in a quiet country town was somehow not so exciting. I
spent all my evenings sitting alone in my room, crying and wishing I was back home with my friends.
The family didnt even let me use the phone more than once a week. I was homesick, miserable and
bored. It was a complete nightmare!
By the end of six weeks, my relationship with the parents had soured so much that we were barely
speaking. One day they told me they had found a new au pair, so I decided to leave and go travelling
for a few weeks, before returning home. I was sad to leave the children, because we had got on well,
but I had had the worst six weeks of my life in that house. I couldnt wait to leave!

Obviously we didnt keep in touch. I often wonder how those poor children turned out.
