Analytical Paper
This paper is between 2,500 - 3,500 words (excluding literal and smooth
translations) on a passage in the New Testament selected by the students and
approved by the professor. The analytical paper should include the following:

Introduction of the book including the structure (outline) of


the whole book and location of the passage.
Literal translation of the selected text
Smooth translation of the selected text
Structure or outline of the selected text
Diagramming of the passage (per complete sentence, in the
Appendix)
Grammatical, syntactical and functional/discourse analyses.
This will include study of words.
Analysis of the textual apparatus and how its
recommendations could affect the meaning of the selected
text.
Use of extra biblical references such as commentaries.
Theological/Personal reflection.

Word study
Word should be understood in its context. Thus the following should be
considered:
1.
The social and cultural situation of the writer and his readers.
2.
The writing style of the writer and the way he uses words.
3.
The literary context of the word.
i.
How is the word used in its literal context? Is it used literally,
idiomatically or figuratively?
ii.
Consider the genre of the text.
iii.
Is the word used repeatedly in the passage, in the book or in other
books?

Select the word(s) to be studied.


Use a good lexicon (dictionary) to determine its usages in the Scripture.
Based on the lexicon determine the various ways the word has been used
in its various contexts.
Look for a concordance to determine its occurrences in the Scripture.
Determine the genres in which it is used. Is it prose, poetry, wisdom,
prophecy, etc?
Study how the word has been used in its various occurrences. Try
categorizing its usages, if possible.
Based on the lexicon and the concordance evaluate how your word has
been used in your passages context.
