Maria Josefa Gabriela Cario was born in


the barrio of Canlogan, Santa, Ilocos Sur.
Her father is Anselmo Cario, a Spaniard
from Santa,.Her mother, on the other
hand was an Tingguian household maid
from Tayum, Abra.

After being widowed by


her first husband,
Gabriela met 27-year-old
Ilocano insurgent leader,
Diego Silang, and married
him.

Miguel Vicos and Pedro Becbec visited


Diego Silang's house at Casa Real,
Vigan. Diego Silang was shot and was
killed after the Audencia put a prize on
Diego's head .

After Diegos assassination, Gabriela


fled to Tayum, Abra to seek refuge
and later assumed her husband's role
as commander of the rebel troops.

Maria Josefa was raised solely by his


father under Christian influence, and
was subjected to arranged marriage
to a wealthy businessman, Toms
Millan in 1951 .

Gabriela Silang and her troops were


executed by hanging in Vigan's central
plaza. Gabriela Silang was a woman who
fought for rights of the people along with
his husband. She is a courageous person
who fought until the end with great pride.

Because of the inequality of


rights and laws of the
Spanish in Ilocos, Diego
Silang started to liberate and
succeeded at first.

Gabriela Silang tried to besiege Vigan


but the Spanish fought against her,
forcing her into hiding. She retreated
to Abra where the Spanish later
captured her.
