Maria Josefa Gabriela Cariño was born in 1731 in Santa, Ilocos Sur. She was raised by her Spanish father and indigenous Ilocano mother. After being widowed, she married Diego Silang in 1757 and helped lead a rebellion against Spanish rule after his assassination in 1762. When Spanish forces killed Diego, Gabriela fled to Abra but later assumed command of the rebel troops. She was eventually captured, brought back to Vigan, and executed by hanging for her resistance.

father under Christian influence, and was subjected to arranged marriage to a wealthy businessman, Toms Millan in 1951 .
Gabriela Silang and her troops were
executed by hanging in Vigan's central plaza. Gabriela Silang was a woman who fought for rights of the people along with his husband. She is a courageous person who fought until the end with great pride.
Because of the inequality of
rights and laws of the Spanish in Ilocos, Diego Silang started to liberate and succeeded at first.
Gabriela Silang tried to besiege Vigan
but the Spanish fought against her, forcing her into hiding. She retreated to Abra where the Spanish later captured her.
