Three examples from Classical antiquity might clarify how the Grand manner

manages its effects differently

from "organic" patterns or the common grid. Delphi the processional experience
derived from the irregular climb
of the sacred way. The temple of Apollo took its place against the mountain spur, its
freestanding sculptural form
shifting in angle and magnitude in the eye of the approaching pilgrim.
Prienes inflexible grid, on the steep lower slopes of Mount Micale, locked the
temple of Athena in the
rectangularity of its blocks and forced visitors to approach it along a straight line.

The case of Hippodamus of Miletus is puzzling. But what distinguished it, was the
fact that it relied on a
theoretical formula of geometry, more so than the purely technical (and empirical)
practice of land surveyors, the
system involved the division of the territory into sectors, each with its own
rectilinear street pattern; the setting
aside of public areas, delimited by boundary markers, for specific public functions;
and provision for the
placement of public buildings dfgdf gf h df h

In pre-Classical antiquity, we cannot point to entire urban systems that could be

called Baroque.
In the Hellenistic period, there is an important development. The planning of in
Attalid Pergamon in the 3rd
and 2nd centuries bc seems to attest to a distinctive school of urban design which
employs a sophisticated
array of "Baroque" devices in a coordinated system. The city form of Pergamon,
laid out on a narrow

mountailesn ridge in western Asia Minor, is an integrated series of visual and kinetic
experiences.
The Compositional features of the city are:
Terraces forming a fan of platforms.
No Master Plan. The more remarkable in that the city form die not result from a
master plan
Other standard features of the city form were public open spaces and avenues.
Above all there is the panoply
of public buildings. These were sprinkled all across the urban fabric, so that no
neighborhood was without some
public monument, and certainly none without commercial activity.
