Standard:
2.NBT.9 Explain why addition and subtraction strategies work, using place value and the
properties of operations.
2.NBT.B.7 Add and subtract within 1000, using concrete models or drawings and
strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between
addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method. Understand that in
adding or subtracting three-digit numbers, one adds or subtracts hundreds and hundreds,
tens and tens , ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose or decompose
tens or hundreds.
Leamer Outcome:
Students will use math strategies (number line with bunny hops) to solve three-digit,
addition problems.
Pre-Assessment Activity:
Have students make their “boxes” and number 1-8.
Write 287+112= on the board.
Give students a few minutes to work on both.
(GRAY Have a student show how to solve by using base ten on the board and
another student how to solve by number line (bunny hops). Discuss how both of them can.
be used to solve the same problem,

Learning Activities (Guided Practice/Collaborative Practice):
Each group will be assigned a word problem and given a buzzard. Each group will be in
charge of picking a leader. The leader will read the word problem out loud to the group.
Within the group, students will be paired off with their partner. They will work on the
problem by themselves on their whiteboards and then share and discuss with their
partner. Partners have been predetermined. Once each partner has had a chance to solve,
share and discuss within the group, the leader will hit the buzzard letting me know they
are done, Student will be underlining what they know and circling what they are trying
to find out. Each problem will be projected on the board. The leader will come on the
board and draw their number line with bunny hops. The group that buzzes in first, gets
the answer correct, is able to explain why we use strategies and with each of its members
solving correctly on their whiteboard will receive 50 cents for each member. Go through
every group starting with who buzzed in 1%, 2™, 3" and then 4",
*Remind students during this time, they are to use “Table Talk” voices. Have students
demonstrate table talk.

put all their Pokemon cards together. How many Pokemon cards do Ryan and Janessa
have altogether?

read altogether?

Green: Adrian has 127 jelly beans. Scarlett has 462 jelly beans. Adrian gave Scarlett all
his jelly beans. How many jelly beans does Searlett have now?

Purple: Maxx has 265 marbles. Xienna has 321 marbles. Maxx and Xienna put all their
marbles in a jar together. How many marbles are there in the jar?
265+321=Independent Practice:
Each student will solve one word problem. They will underline “what we know” and
circle “what we are trying to find out.” Students are to solve the problem using expanded
form and number line with bunny hops. Students will write in their own words at the end
why we use strategies to solve problems.
Assessment:
Independent practice will serve as assessment.
Closure:
“Number lines with bunny hops are only one way to solve math problems. Math
strategies help us see math problems with a picture. I want you to tell me in your own
words why we use strategies to solve math problems.”
Give students their Exit Ticket: “Why do we use strategies to solve math problems?”
